Somebody help me out with him. Because everybody raved about his two way play but an ELC with his production in Grand Rapids seems weird.

He was on an amateur tryout, and was 6 games away from hitting the 25 game limit. And he is already 20, so he can't go back to the WHL where he played last year. So, they had to sign him to some sort of contract, or find somewhere else for him to play. I guess they could have signed him to a straight AHL deal, but an ELC serves essentially the same purpose. It's not likely he's going to be making much more than ELC money if he ever makes the show anyway, so what's the big deal?

There really isn't a big deal at all, was just curious as to the timing and wasn't aware of those details.

He was injured in the off-season as well and missed all the training/conditioning so he’s basically trying to get up the speed during the year. I wouldn’t worry too much about his production so far. The Wings were probably waiting to see how he recovered from the injury before deciding whether to give him an ELC or just an AHL deal.

Kid can play and got his ELC by the end of the year, as predicted.

The issue was his injury kept him out of rookie camp and NHL training camp. They wanted to start him in the AHL because he would’ve just dominated back in the WHL again, but couldn’t get a good feel for where he was at because he got injured so early.

He’s finally returned from his injury, and has about 10-12 games in the AHL now. He’s been playing C mostly but wing in recent games.

He’s a sleeper who’s not a sleeper. People know how skilled he is. They have every expectation he will play as a regular in the NHL. They’d prefer to have him concentrate at C, but we’ll see. In Juniors, he dominated overnight after being moved to the wing, and that’s where I think he’ll end up. That’s where we see him anyway. Detroit seemed pretty determined to start him at C though. Like I said, we’ll see. They have him playing C tonight in Grand Rapids, and it’s now apparent that’s where he’ll stay this season.
