The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has hired Derek Clancey as Assistant General Manager, Player Personnel.
"We are excited to add Derek to our hockey operations department," said Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving. "I feel Derek is one of the premier talent evaluators in our game. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and will play a big role as we continue our goal of building a championship team."

Clancey also served as an assistant coach of with the American Hockey League's Manchester Monarchs in 2005-06.

Our pro scouts really needs some help
Some of the players we signed over the years were head scratchers considering how much injuries they have had

Did these guys actually watch these guys play in the seasons we got them? Especially with their injury history

Looks like he won his three cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins, started in 2007 and won 2x with Jim Rutherford, so not exactly a draft and develop savant like an Al Murray in LA/Tampa. Off the top of my head the Pens drafted or developed Muzzin, Guentzel, Murray, Jarry, Rust around that time frame. But maybe he knows how to surround a core with a championship caliber cast.

Edit. Looks like he was more of a pro scout.

Looks like this Pro Scout was around for the Kadri, Huberdeau, and Weeger signings/trades... so not sure this guy's track record is better.

Having said that, he may have not been involved in those and maybe he is a great evaluator of talent.

Yes the Pens drafting hasn't been great during that time but as you say, he has pretty much been in pro scouting for his career there. Looks like Jack Johnson was added during his tenure which was a Boss level mistake but maybe Rutherford overuled him :)

He was working in Vancouver when those deals happened.
