Canucks need a 2C. New Jersey potentially needs goaltending as Allen is a UFA and Markstrom only has one more year left and is getting old. NJ also appears to be running up against the cap with Luke Hughes’ extension this summer.

Maybe this deal makes more sense at the trade deadline, so Demko can show he is healthy based on the coming season.

Assuming Demko is healthy and starting 50 or so games at a top 5-10 goalie level, how is the value of this proposal?

If they don't bring back Allen, they'll almost certainly replace him with daws I have to imagine.

The devils need to add forwards, not subtract them.

If Mercer goes, it should be for another forward

Yeah and if Mercer were a 40 goal Selke winger he’d cost a lot more than Demko.

Pretty absurd to assume any team is going to pay for A) an assumed reliably healthy Demko and B) an assumed top 5-10 starter Demko.

Markstrom is still under contract regardless.

I mean, Demko has shown that ability before and it’s only been one season of injuries. Like I said, the trade probably makes the most sense at the deadline assuming Demko has proven to be healthy. Maybe Lankinen makes more sense though.

It’s Demko, bro

I mean yes, in 2023-24 he was Vezina finalist caliber but that was sandwich between a season of 32 games in 22-23 of 0.901 and 3.16 and 23 games in 24-25 of 0.889 and 2.90.

A healthy, locked in Demko, guaranteed - sure, the upside is great. But good luck selling that as the parameters of your asking price.

Vancouver needs to retain 50% or no deal

Demko is probably the 2nd most important piece on the nucks going into next season.
He's going into the summer fully healthy for the first time in two years and there is no scenario I see management moving him and having a repeat of this season.
Lankinen was great in October and half of November but clearly struggled with a #1 workload and if we had Demko all year despite everything else we likely make the playoffs and the doom and gloom of 90 point season where we struggled with injuries and scoring isnt the main takeaway from the season.
The team has 20+ million in cap, picks and prospects that should get us a top winger and hopefully another impact forward.
The Dcorp is basically locked in and a definite strength and Thatcher likely bounces back to his numbers from two years ago.
Trading Demmer is like a big fuk you to Quinn in a season he's gonna be eligible for massive extension.
I think we see the team Uber aggressive at the draft and in the summer in hopes of putting this miserable, shit, gong show of a season in the rear view.

Like others have said tho, a healthy Demko is a top goalie and Mercer alone likely doesn't get it done.

Would you do it if reversed?

Mercer is something of an Ironman for NJ. Demko is coming off a tough season with injuries that impact a goalie’s most important physical attributes. NJ wouldn’t worry about a goalie move until after next season and that’s assuming Markstrom falls off the table. Otherwise he could add another year in NJ pretty easily. By then Demko hits free agency. Not really a great fit for NJ.

Demko isn’t heathy though. And he’s a coming UFA 2026. The risk is far too high for a club to give up much in trade for him.
Maybe read what the op posted then.

The parameters the op said would be ideally at the tdl if Demko is proven to be healthy and playing as a top 5-10 goalie

So where in those parameters is Demko not healthy again?

lol except neither of those things are true.
The only way your reply to me makes sense is if you’re talking about Demko being healthy and a top 5-10 goalie. Otherwise your post makes 0 sense.

If that’s the case you clearly didn’t read the op posted at all before replying to my reply to the op.

Maybe read what someone’s replying to before replying to their reply? You’d save yourself the embarrassment that way.

If Demko is healthy and playing at a top 5-10 level he’s going to cost a lot more than Mercer

You’d get Lankinen not Demko.

This is what makes Demko basically impossible to trade for "value". If he's healthy, he's a Vezina caliber goaltender on a bargain contract. That'd cost a fortune to acquire. But nobody in their right mind is going to fully believe in Demko staying "healthy"...so he's not really worth much at all because you can't rely on him.

So he's basically just stuck in with the Canucks sitting around hoping he can stay healthy and carry them to great results. But it's basically a "bonus" situation on top of whatever Lankinen can do for them as a somewhat more reliable option.
