There are two recurring pipe dreams that Leaf fans need to let go of, and quickly.
1) The Maple Leafs just need one defensemen.
2) The Maple Leafs will address their defensive issues by trading one of, or a package of, James Van Riemsdyk or Kasperi Kapanen.
Neither of these things are realistic.
It's going to be painful to fix what's wrong with this team, but it's also going to be very worth it. The Maple Leafs have some *excellent* pieces in place and the team is very deep offensively. A big piece - a tough piece to lose - is going to have to go to get a difference maker on defense and then after that, another solid blue liner is required too. But once that is done, they become a legit contender so the pain will be worth it.

nope. better to just see what we have with liljegren,nielsen,dermott,borgman,rosen etc.
2018-2019 is likely to be the leafs best shot to contend. they will have a lot more cap space and matthews and marner will still be on ELC

Carlo would give the leafs a top young shutdown d-man who can skate and has a great outlet pass.

Knee jerk reaction to what?
The Maple Leafs defense has been terrible for years. This is the opposite of a knee jerk reaction.
They keep putting lipstick on a pig, but in the end, its still a pig.
If you honestly think the team has a snowballs chance in hell of contending for anything with Jake Gardiner playing meaningful minutes on their blueline, you're living in a fantasy land. You really believe that in 2018-2019 Liljergren will be ready to be a difference maker on their blueline? Come on.
These forwards are ready to make valued contributions right now. What would the reason be to not support them and give them a legitimate chance to win by acquiring some defensemen that can be part of the solution? Why wait?

You can have JVR and Bozak, the defenseman doesn't even have to be good, hell he doesn't even have to be a defenseman, or a person. a 7th will do. You can make it conditional if you want to.

If I had to guess I would say there is a 0% chance that Boston would trade him for anything offered in the OP, aka anything that isn't Matthews. He's their future #1D and I think that organization knows just how important that is given that they had Chara through his prime.

I WAS willing to do Tanev for Marner but I'm not so sure anymore. Leafs missed their chance. I'd still do it for Nylander though.

He's worth way less than Nylander and way more than a late 1st.

The same Tanev that can't stay healthy and may be heading to LTIR in 2-4 years with Lupul, Horton and Robidas? Yeah, that Tanev.
No chronic injuries, concussion issues, or surgeries. But yeah, he's headed to permanent LTIR...
You may want to actually look into his injuries/illnesses that forced him out of the lineup before making such an idiotic claim.

What they were like five years ago is irrelevant.
Not it isn't. They are still in a rebuild and a lot of Leafs fans need to understand that rebuilds aren't completed overnight.
Because the price of rushing things would set the franchise back.
