It's overvalued in the NHL by some calculations, at least during the regular season, but understandably so. Size is crucial for playoff series.

Hopefully one or some of Roy, Hutson, Kidney, Engstrom, Konyushkov et. have the kind of meteoric pro rise that pushes them into elite impact & makes those picks look like genius moves (the kind of diamonds in the rough that helps fans forget that the same scouting department that "hit" on Kuch/Point valued Namestikov over Kuch, D'Angelo, Massin & MacLeod over Point & Drouin over Horvat/Jones/Nurse/Monahan/Lindholm & many others with better careers than JD).

He fell because of size and his injury. Not the first time and certainly not the last time. It was also a very strong draft with two reaches in the top 12.

Also it is not a strong argument to use an appeal to autorithy such as "why did he fall tho". Stop.

Deep doesn't mean full of stars. It means full of NHLers with decent careers. In most drafts, many picks, even first rounders, don't crack the NHL for more than 100-200 games. Even looking back on 2003, while many guys had high peaks, completely lacks star power. Nearly every guy who was heralded as a star only had 3-4 years of great play. There's not a single all-time great forward, Bergy is special for his defense, in the draft. Weber and Bergeron pushed their way to the top of the draft through compiling. Staal and Bergeron are the only guys in the draft who outscored Kovalev at the NHL level, who is not an all-time great. Pavelski should end up passing everyone this season though. 39 points from Bergy and 62 from Staal. Still playing as a PPG player. I'm pretty sure Staal came back last year just to stop Bergeron from passing him.

McDavid is on pace to pass the draft by next Christmas and he'd only be 27.
