I don't know that I'd call Quinn a great teacher either and this is coming from someone who thinks player development under him has been mostly positive.

He's not a tactician (hes the WORST in game coach in the league by a billion miles when it comes to in game adjustments. Its not just the PP), hes not a motivator and beyond that his decisions between games have been questionable at best (this year? downright horrible.)

This isn't the only young team in the league. Chicago is a young team that have been ravaged by Injuries and they havev zero goaltending, why have they performed better than the Rangers have? They've had more things go wrong for them than we have.

There is no excuse for this team to be at a Detroit/SJ/LA level. I understand that they have had some issues out of Quinn's control, but hes contributed to their ineptness much more than his apologists care to admit.

This coaches negatives heavily out weigh the positives - for the DURR grass is greener side, most of us understand that there is no such thing as a perfect coach. A guy who has his pulse on the game and isn't losing games before they're played because of roster decisions should be a f***ing solid requirement though. Hes ran his course here, it's time to move on.
A lot of the reason people don’t “care to admit” things are his fault is because the vast majority of the times he’s blamed for something, it’s just someone saying things are his fault and offering no explanation or proof of why that is.

Like he’s the worst tactical coach in the league... based on what?

It's been a while since I was at uni, but you and I obviously had very different professors and entirely different curriculums!

Mine would likely have argued that it's at about the draft age where people tend to alter and add to their character quite a bit...

I beg to differ..
I'm hardly the greatest example but my character changed (in a competitive way) roughly at the age of 9 and throughout my life nobody has ever changed that as that's just apart of who I am.
That's like saying..Get a new personality because yours sucks..My answer to that would be, f*** You lol
I feel that at draft age, you adapt to different surrounds and learn a little more about life which is a completely different story entirely.
People have taught me how to deal with certain situations, channel emotions and conduct myself professionally in the real world but it's my character (work ethic, dedication, drive, knowledge, thought process..etc) that has always been the baseline in any and every advancement..
Let's put it this way..It's not something that can be taught without manipulation or mind altering drugs IMO lol

That's fair enough. A lot of my character was develop while I was in the Army (and I don't think they gave us mind altering jobs) which taught and shaped me in a lot of ways I wasn't exposed to growing up, and then a lot more when I became a father (at times I wish there were drugs for that one!).

I would like this but apparently I'm not able to because I inquired about a banned poster

Well, he is, so...

Haven't seen it myself but I saw someone mention that @IneffectiveMath on Twitter has a coaching performance model or something and David Quinn ranks dead last in that. Seems like it is locked behind his Patreon though.

Is this what you’re referring to? The names are general the arrows point to "turtling" positions, that is, when tied or leading by one or two in third periods:

This is also a relative scale of effects:

Here there are many interesting insights to be had:
  • The teammate distribution is much bigger than the competition distribution, in agreement with many previous studies showing that variation in competition (which is only loosely controlled by coaches) is much smaller than the variation in teammates, which coaches control almost completely. However, there are certain players for whom the net impact of competition is much larger than that of teammates, even over the scale of full seasons. In general, a careful analysis should always begin with teammates but also include competition and contextual effects.
  • Controlling for teammates, competition, and zone effects, as we do, the aggregate size of score effects is surprisingly small—almost negligible. Within a single game the score is important; at the scale of a whole season it is not, for most players.
  • Zone effects are also surprisingly small; their total extent is considerably smaller than competition effects which are themselves smaller than teammate effects. By focussing on only offensive zone faceoffs and defensive zone faceoffs, as some analyses do, differences between contexts which are in fact quite small can appear heavily inflated.
  • Coaching effects, over and above coaching choices like score and zone usage, have a non-trivial effect but still pale in comparison to teammates and competition.
  • The fatigue distribution is incredibly tiny, invisible in comparison to the others. (In fact it is so small it can't be seen on axes at this scale, so I didn't graph it)
  • Coaching effects, over and above coaching choices like score and zone usage, have a non-trivial effect but still pale in comparison to teammates and competition.
Unsurprisingly the quality of the roster is by far the most important.

I don't pin it all on Quinn. We've got some guys that get multiple prime chances every night and can't cash in. Proven commodities.

That said, the coach is in over his head, doesn't know what to do to fix things, and needs to go.

Half of me is worried Quinn will ruin Kakko and Laf’s development. The other half is worried they’ll demand a trade.
