Game 1 and all, but man going back to last season and how the bubble went, it's sure starting to feel like something's missing. People can't even use Lundqvist as a scapecoat anymore so at some point we'll have to take a look at what Quinn's role in this equation is. Coaching pros like they're sophomores in college is not gonna cut it in the locker room long term.

Can't underestimate the importance of a good coach. Look at Barry Trotz. I mean aside from Barzal, they have no stars on their team. I mean who the f*** are Brock Nelson, Anders Lee and Ryan Pulock? Random f***ers who wouldn't even be recognized on the street if they wore their own jerseys. But Trotz gets the most out of them and has them overachieve.

I'm so f***ing jealous that the Islanders have a coach like Trotz and we have a guy who is in wayyyyy over his head in Quinn.

And let’s not forget that the Rangers could have had Trotz if they were not so eager to hire a coach literally no other organization would have hired back when Quinn was given the job. Barry became available a month or so later.

As @NYR said, glad most of the board now is saying what he and I and a few others have been saying for years now. The big difference seems to be that now people actually have expectations for this team and are less patient with Quinn. At least we can cross off the list of excuses “ he’s a new coach just trying to figure out what he has.”

Wasn't it like 10 days after we hired Quinn that Trotz was let go ?

Well this didn't take long. I see that the usual personages must have been waiting to pounce on something like this since last March.

Juggling lines 25 minutes into the season. Howden with more ice-time than Kakko. Same shit, different year

You're surprised a player on the PK got more ice time than a player not in the PK in a game they took 8 penalties? They didn't really juggle lines much. https://hockeyviz.com/game/2020020008/homeUsage This is a typical looking chart. Less juggling than I usually see. Lines got weird because they took a ton of penalties.

I don’t want to overreact to one game, but Quinn really does a terrible job getting his guys ready to play. This team does has talent. There’s no excuse for them to look that bad.
True words right here. Those guys were not in any way shape or form ready to play that game last night. That’s on him.
I’ve said this for years now, once the Rangers are truly ready to compete they are going to have to go out and get a real coach. Hopefully Florida and Quennville part ways this year. Would also love Galant.

The lack of preparation is on Quinn, I agree. The lack of compete is on the players. But again, it's just one game.

The problem that we will face this season comes down to coaching. This is an abbreviated season with a miniscule training camp, in which the majority of the season will be played in consecutive games against teams who are familiar with our squad. A good coach benefits from this structure because if a bad first game happens, they can make adaptions and improve the product moving forward. A poor coach will be exposed. So far, I have not seen anything from Quinn to suggest he is a good coach; rather, he is simply "a" coach. Quinn appears to be the result of a randomized "create a coach" in an NHL 20 character editor. He preaches fundamentals, has a charismatic smile, does the politically correct things (e.g. giving the veterans leeway), and emphasizes practice. He says the right things to management and he's a good looking guy. But when it comes to coaching, it goes beyond just being a politician, as it involves making intelligent roster decisions and making the best out of your squad. During last season, we got into a rhythm and everybody started overperforming. Was this the result of raw talent, or coaching? I'm inclined to believe it's the former, because teams we saw last night were a reflection of the coaching staffs -- Trotz did a tremendous job preparing the Islanders, and Quinn did more of the usual. I can give a pass for our team being young and for this being the first game, but this isn't the first time we have looked flat coming out of the gate in a situation like this.

Something like that. The absolute worst part of that situation is the Rangers felt they had to have Quinn in place before the draft so he could be involved in decisions... because clearly an unproven, hired a month ago mostly college coach was going to have a ton of influence over who was picked...

When things go awry, well coached teams are able to fall back on structure. Structure can keep a bad start from becoming a blowout. Structure can keep a rusty team in the game while they find their legs. Structure lets you know where your teammates should be when things just aren't clicking. Not always, but at least sometimes.

This team never seems structured. Or its structured so poorly that it doesn't matter. I honestly can't tell the difference.

The game plan seems to perpetually be: "Hey talented guys, go out there and be talented!" and when that happens, when Panarin, Z, Fox, Tony D and the PP and the goaltending are all playing up to their talent the Rangers stand a good chance of winning. And when it doesn't happen you get last night. Or the playoffs.

AV takes a lot of heat around here. He had his quirks but Kreider/Zuc/Fast/Brassard/etc. developed under him.

He's a much better coach than Quinn.

Unprepared now in all three years plus the bubble.
I feel pretty confident that if you gave AV this lineup, the team would be pretty much what they are now.

When we were the hottest team in the league for months does all the credit go to Quinn just like all the blame for the bubble & last night goes to him?

I’m pretty sure it just goes to Mika and Artemi. I don’t really think poppa Quinn was strapping the skates on and showing them how to snipe. They just played like superstars.

AV has flaws, but he actually has a system that works splendidly if he has the right players. The Rangers with far less "talent" from 13-15 played some incredible hockey under AV.
AV's vaunted system was essentially relying on top-5 goalie play to cover up any and all mistakes. When that didn't happen, his system collapsed.

I dont think its possible to defend his coaching the past 4 games.

It's 4 games but we should be laying a structurally secure foundation for the youth. Not chaos.

Don’t forget Hayes. Plays both ends of ice and could be Flyers top 3 player. Comparing the two is a joke. But I understand at this point with the amount of hate AV gets on here still to this day
