Barry may be an ass to us but he's doing his job. Having Pastrnak stay in Europe is a wise choice.
It's a game of cat and mouse now
If the bonus money is that important to Barry the a 3 year deal is only solution
Jeremy Jacobs paying guaranteed lockout money would be a shocker and Barry knows this.
If bonus money isn't an issue I expect long term deal
If it's a deal breaker either side they will go short
I agree that more than likely it's about bonus money/lockout protection which is a concern on a number of levels.
Jacobs will resist that because it goes against his DNA on this issue (CBA, labor negotiations, League history of lockouts, his important role in all of above, his believe that system is out of whack, etc., etc, etc.)
On the other hand, Barry is probably saying "Jacobs will be the driver of the next lockout and I fully expect there to be a lockout. If that happens, the guy who is signing a contract with you is going to be the one that drives the League shutting down for a season and you not getting paid. All we're trying to do is not let him do that. Sign a contract and honor the contract -- organizing a lockout is not honoring the contract you earned and deserve."
I don't like either man, but I could argue either side's point pretty easily......
