I will admit. I wanted Mark Fayne. Younger, Cheaper, Underrated player who works behind the scenes. I think he is a perfect replacement for Stralman at the 4th spot. Heck, he even has experience as the top 2. And to have played for the Devils I really like too. Thats a balanced organization and that is always good.

But thats no longer possible this season.

Dan Boyle is the guy. So lets start with positive thoughts on the signing. Respect the guy who said no to Detroit and yes to the Ranges... for less.

1) #22... Anyone who has a Brian Boyle jersey will be happy
2) Detroit wanted him. If that organization can get behind a player than so can I.
3) Plays a ton of minutes. Even for 38, the guy is consistently the Sharks best D-man. No reason to worry that he just came here to retire richer. Hard worker.
4) Right handed D-man is a plus for us. A well rounded D man. Maybe a bit too much for a 4th D but hes a possible #1 PP QB, strong defensively and creative on the offense. He is talented. No worry there

Rangers' Boyle has led his team in minutes per game for 11 straight NHL seasons & wouldn't mind making it 12

Well Dan Boyle did lead the team in ice time , but his ice time for the last five seasons is:

2009-10 26:13
2010-11 26:14
2011-12 25:35
2012-13 22:48
2013-14 21:17

Makes sense, considering his age. I don't think Boyle will be logging more ice time than McDonagh and Girardi - if he does, we have other problems.

Never more than DG and McD but maybe 22 minutes/game

Ya, that seems to be Boyle's career trajectory right now. And I have to think even if Girardi gets hurt and misses time, Boyle will not step into Girardi kind of ice time with McDonagh - at least not for any length of time.

will appreciate him when he does something worth appreciating for the New York Rangers.

And no, taking 4.5 is not worth appreciating when he hasn't yet lived up to that number just yet.

Not worried about Dan Boyle. Having less ice time and playing in the eastern conference might bring him back to a somewhat elite level.

The reduction in ice time has been in part due to the fact that Boyle isn't killing penalties any more. Down from 2, to 1, to 0 minutes per game over the last few years.

That's actually OK, as the Rangers have Kevin Klein to pair with Staal on the second penalty kill pairing. Use Boyle in offensive situations, Klein in defensive ones.

At first glance I thought this was a Brian Boyle appreciation thread, which would make more sense considering he has actually made contributions in a Ranger jersey while Dan Boyle has yet to do so.

I would mind this.

Also, I think it's traditional for an appreciation thread to follow a player accomplishing something for the team, not the other way around.

He's not the sharks best D-man and on top of that, he doesn't deserve appreciation when he's literally not even worn a Rangers jersey yet.

If he does hopefully it's because the Rangers are averaging much more PP ice time compared to PK ice time and Boyle is out there for those leisurely minutes compared to the tougher PK and ES minutes.

By that logic he doesn't deserve the irrational hate he's been getting either

I think people are more likely to post when they dislike something, rather than when they like something. Just like discontented or angry citizens are more likely to vote.

I'm sure there is a psychological study about it somewhere.

Not that I think he deserves the hate, or that anyone deserves irrational hate, but expressing doubts about a player is not the inverse of showing appreciation for a player for accomplishments that haven't happened yet.
