Would be nice to have a guy like Nelson on the roster to help carry the load until Ek is back to 100%. Nelson, Ek, Rossi down the middle sounds like a deep playoff run to me. Nelson can play wing too and would give the wild a lot of flexibility. I know our GM hasn’t traded valuable assets for a ‘rental’ but I wonder if this seasons hot start and the potential to resign Nelson past this year is enough motivation for Bill to go all in.

Idk how the Wild realistically get Nelson. They would have to deal their first in 2027 since 2026 is still possible for the Jackets via the Jiricek trade.

I wouldn’t do Ohgren. Maybe Heidt/Stramel +

Minny sent their 25 first right? Are any of the 26 picks upgradeable to a 1st?

Personally not a fan of Heidt or Stramel, and if that 2026 1st isn't available either, then Ohgren has to be included or else a deal just isn't happening straight up. Other teams wouldn't give that quality of prospect up but they'd at least have a first + a regular prospect which will easily outbid Heidt + 2nd or whatever

Realistically the 2026 1st wouldn’t even be beneficial unless you want something that will be a 4-5 year project down the line. Outside of it being a 2025 1st (and not one of the last 3-5 of the round), the prospect would have to be something of substantial quality that can help the team in the next year or two (at the latest).

Why isn't Heidt a 'regular' prospect and what is a regular prospect?

So if he goes to a team with a late 2025 1st, that late 2025 1st + run of the mill prospect is fine, but because Minnesota doesn't have a late 2025 1st, we need to offer a prospect of substantial quality - better than anything anyone else is offering - to get a deal done?

That's not how this works. Nelson isn't suddenly worth Ohgren just because we don't have the 1st. If that disqualifies us so be it, but in no world does it mean Ohgren is suddenly a fair return.

Personally not a fan of sending anything of value for a guy that has a strong chance of signing in Minnesota in the offseason anyways. Trading Ohgren or a 1st for him would be a dumb shortsighted move.

It’s more like there’s no reason to just take some mediocre prospect who might top out as a bottom 6 forward and a 1st in 3 seasons from now (or a mid round pick from 2025) just to get an asset for Brock Nelson.

Well there's a reason to take the best offer you can get, which may or may not be Minnesota's offer.

Simple fact is he's going to get traded, and the return is likely going to be a 1st+prospect, and neither of those pieces are likely going to be as highly valued as Ohgren.

There's no reason to include Ohgren in this deal at all.

Who’s to say they won’t be? Teams usually overpay for high priced rentals in order to load up for the playoffs. Also knowing how Lou is, if the Isles are remotely close to the playoffs he won’t sell off assets in hopes of stocking up on picks/prospects for the future.

Simple fact is none of us know what is going to happen. That includes you and me.

The Isles are at best a bubble team and with the return of Barzal and Pelech to the lineup they could still make a run at a playoff spot. Throw in Sorokin standing on his head as he often does and maybe Nelson doesn’t get moved.

Assuming Lou remains at the helm, he could easily resign him for 3-4 more years. Not saying I agree with it but Lou does Lou.

Yea that probably disqualifies you if that’s you’re breaking point lmao. We’re not gonna work out a deal we don’t want when there’ll be plenty of suitors.

Fantasy:

Columbus fans, "Jiricek is worth Rossi/Ohgren/Wallstedt and a 1st!"

Reality:
Minnesota gives up a late 1st, a 2027 2nd round pick, a 2025 3rd (Avs or Wild, Wild have two) and a 2025 4th (Maple Leafs or Wild have two) plus a depth defenseman in Hunt for Jiricek and a 5th

If you look at what Tarasenko went for last year, Nelson is probably equivalent. Maybe a 2nd and a 4th?

Yeah a lot of fans tend to overvalue what they're selling to the point where it's not worth a discussion. As you said, Columbus fans insisted they didn't need to sell Jiricek for anything less than Rossi/Yurov/Buium/Wallstedt, and even offering Ohgren+ wasn't enough for them, then they didn't even get Ohgren+.

I still think Nelson gets 1st+lower tier prospect, but the substitute for not having a 1st is not a top prospect. It's more "spare parts" as they'd call them.

The reality about Brock Nelson is that he's not a special player, especially as a rental. He'll go for standard rental price for what he is. Look at some of the bigger rental deals the last few years. No one pays top prospects for them. 1sts/2nds+. The last one I can remember getting such a return is Mark Stone, and he was in his prime and signed an extension for 8 years iirc.

Didn't Guentzel/Lindholm go for a lot?

Lindholm went for a 1st, Hunter Brzustewicz, Andrei Kuzmenko, Joni Jurmo and a 4th.

Not saying that Nelson is worth that, but a good young center can net you a lot.

Jake Guentzel went for Cruz Lucius, Ville Koivunen, Vasily Ponomarev, Michael Bunting, a 2nd and a 5th?

Guentzel was with Ty Smith and the 2nd would have been a 1st if Carolina went to the cup finals.

I'm not sure I'd consider either of those "a lot", and both are better/younger than Nelson. But I think both of those deals show that even for top end rentals, expecting a top end prospect is only setting yourself up for disappointment.

Think the Wild could easily be competitive for Nelson without including a 1st, Yurov, Buium, Jiricek, Wallstedt or Ohgren.

Heidt, Lambos, Peart, Stramel, Kumpulainen, Spacek, Ritchie, Haight, 2nd, could all get it done if it's the right combination.

Wow. Just wow.

Nelson plays a premium position as a center and has averaged 35 goals a season for the last 3 years on an offensively challenged team. He rarely gets injured.

Tank plays wing and has averaged 11 goals a season over the same time period with intermittent injuries.

You can’t compare those 2 players.

Sure you can if u are the Wild as Nelson likely wouldn’t play center on the Wild.

Nelson has shot way above his normal shooting % the last two of three years when he averaged 35 goals a season. He's also 33 years old and is an UFA. Also offensive challenged team isn't the win you think it is here either.

Tank also has two Stanley Cups.

Given that they are rentals and not over the entire course of the season I can. Teams aren't trading for them RIGHT NOW. They are looking at them as rentals come playoff.
