Harley won't get consistent PP1 time since that belongs to Miro

Don't think we'll regret a bridge like this too much

Was he bridged due to cap issues?
Those seldom end well, just look at the oilers with Nurse and now Bouchard and to a lesser extent EP40. All three were bridged because of lack of cap and in hindsight locking them up earlier would have saved a lot of cap now.

Other than that this is good value for now and if the next contract hurts at least that means he took his game to an even higher level.

Every year fans have panic attacks about RFAs not signing, and every year we see what we’re seeing this week.

It’s the RFAs only way to protest, and hope other contracts get signed over the summer, to justify their asking price. Until they have arbitration rights, this is pretty normal. The team and player usually have a good idea what it’s gonna be, and just say, “ok, we’ll talk in September.” Then you’ll usually see the team hold certain cap space aside. Like Detroit held this $16+ million all summer. They knew it was spent. It’s why Edmonton deserved what happened btw. They spent Broberg and Holloway’s cap space like a drunken sailor.

Harley was the one Dman the Broberg deal looked like it might help, but at the end of the day, he came in, right around where people thought, on a bridge. He wasn’t ready for a long deal yet. He still plays a lot of protected minutes, but that likely changes this year. So If everything goes to plan, they’ll end up having to pay him in 24 months.

Dallas is one of the team’s I’m not on top of, but with the deals they have coming, as well as having the ability to do some things, they have to try ridding themselves of Seguin’s contract. Even retaining a nice chunk will help. Their just at that point, every dollar is gonna end up harder to find. Even if Benn leaves or takes a $4-$5 million cut after this year, Seguin’s money sure would help.

very good contract for a guy who was up there with Hughes and Josi for expected even strength offense last season

That ain’t easy to do

It's a great deal for Dallas to be flexible this year; as they can now accrue space for TDL which will give them around $3-4 million. The only downside is that it now lines up for them to have 3 big RFA's in 2 years; Robertson, Stankoven, and Harley with Oettinger RFA/UFA right in there too.

Stuck in that same future quagmire with the Oilers on Bouchard and Rangers with K'Andre. Out of cap necessitated pressure. Oh well though.

In 2 years time Dallas will be clear of Seguin and Benns combined 20 million cap hit (hopefully both still play, but occupying less than half the cap hit). Should have flexibility to get an appropriate deal done.

He wants a long deal, they want to give it to him, but the cap space isn't there today. In two years they'll give him the deal he wants. This ended up being pretty easy because there's a mutual admiration society going on. No one wants to leave Dallas. They know how good he's going to be, and soon.

Waiting for the next salary bump is likely better for the player. It'll probably end up costing the Stars a little more on the next deal, after salary inflation, but they save in the short term. Should even out.

2 years x 4 million. Insanely good deal even for a bridge, but the Stars are going to be backing up the brinks trucks in 2 years.

Agree on that. Stars going to be freeing up some major cap space in Benn this year, and Seguin in 3 years. Going to need that (and more) to handle all the young talent that needs raises.

Good bridge, but considering what the cap is expected to do the next couple of years, his next contract could be a real doozy.

I thought Seguins deal was up in 2 years.
Jamie Benn will either be making a ton less or be gone after 1 year

So this sort of sets themselves up for the future.

Player gets better rights and gets 8 million.
Sets himself up for life and sets himself up for that big pay day.
