Why was Dahlin given the best defenceman at the WJC. He wasn't even a point per game and didn't even score one goal. Can anyone really say that he played the best out of all the D in the tournament? Hes obviously an incredible talent and is going #1 overall but was the award given to him just based off his reputation?

He's a defenseman, he played great defense. I think he was on the ice for like two even strength goals in the whole tournament despite playing 24 minutes a game.

I don't think he was the best defensemen in the tournament but he played well enough that I don't really have a problem with him winning it either.

I mean I know for a fact thats wrong because he was on the ice for 2 vs Canada in the finals. And by that metric Connor Timmins should have got it. He was on for ONLY 1 goal against all tournament and was a +15 not to mention he had a great assist on the game winning goal in the Finals.

I think it was those two plus one goal against Belarus. The last goal was a last minute open net goal where defense is almost discarded completely. It's not the sole metric of course but it's one of the things which indicate how good he was.

Dahlin was not on the ice when Belarus scored, the scorekeepers got that wrong. The voting took place before the GMG when he had not been on the ice for a single goal against while playing the tough minutes.

There was no obvious best D-man this year, he was up there though.

Makes sense. I agree he was definitely a candidate for D mvp I thought it go either way between him and Timmins.

Actually he was. Assisted on Zetterlunds "unassisted" 2-0 goal against the Slovaks, scorekeepers missed that one as well.

Perhaps it was correct, it's a tough call.

Regardless, I expected someone with the hype of Dahlin to perform significantly better than Olli Juolevi at the same age.

He was performing better.

Dahlin was Sweden's best player. Joulevi was riding coattails on the best line (Laine - Aho - Puljujärvi) in the tournament since Näslund - Forsberg - Sundström.

Juolevi has proven twice now that he could never repeat those numbers. Sample size.

Statistically speaking Cale Makar was the best D of the tournament finishing tied for 7th in tournament scoring with 3 goals, 5 assists and 8 points in 7 games with a +5 rating and 0 PIM. Yes there is obviously more to being a good defender than producing points but if it were based purely on statistics (which I think it should) Cale Makar was the best D of this tournament.

The hype and reputation is most certainly a possibility as to why Dahlin won it. I'm okay with it, he's obviously a very good talent.

Numbers maybe not, but his performance this year was much better than last time around. Juolevi's development definitely hasn't been stellar, but I think it would also be wrong to say he has regressed compared to two years ago, he's pretty solid by now.

Dahlin could've scored a couple of goals this tournament, but hit the crossbar and so on. He was a PPG player this tournament, not his fault they couldn't keep track of the assists. He was a wizard with the puck and was a shut down machine in the defensive zone. When he was on the ice, the puck quickly ended up in the offensive zone. I don't think it's that controversial that he won the award, he was a beast all over the ice.
