Back to back 3OA picks
Both on their second teams
As of today, both are on multi-year contracts

Taking age, contract, skill set, performance, outlook into consideration:

Who is the better asset?

The same rebuilding team just traded a 24 year old multi time 40 goals scorer. Guess he sucks too.
From everything I've read they like Debrincat and think he's a great player, but doesn't fit their window that they are building towards.

You think he will be a multi 40 goal scorer without Patrick Kane? They traded Debrincat when his value was at its peak.

People said the same about panarin when he left Kane, didn't seem to bother him too much. The value argument would make sense if they actually got good value for him.

Just reinforces the fact using Blackhawks management in an appeal to authority is a bad idea

I'll take whoever has the shorter contract. Both look like bad value for RFA years.

that's not really the same thing.

Because it ruins his pithy little argument? A new GM came in to do a rebuild and stripped down all the old guy's players for draft picks so he could have his own players. Dach isn't where they hoped he would be after 3 years, but he's hardly a bust.

It took the 13th overall pick to get Dach.

No way KK is fetching that high of a pick so value wise I say Dach easily.

Dach also has far better contract

That's an argument, but is it really that meaningful? It took the 16th overall pick to get former 4th overall Griffin Reinhart. That was really, really dumb at the time and monumentally atrocious with hindsight.

Tbh they are pretty close atm. I think both could end up as solid 2C's. But Dach has the better contract, is right handed and is a much better skater. So I have more faith in him being a ligt 2C vs more if a middle 6 centre.

Yeah I thought that too. How did people feel about that Reinhart trade at the time?

Feel free to disagree but I think it's fair to say without knowing everything, that Dach for 13th overall was fair value, given Dach's toolbox and potential.

With that said, if another GM offered 13th for KK instead, we'd all be laughing our asses off

I remember there was a lot of people saying Reinhart was bad at the time and given they essentially gave up Mat Barzal for him, it was looked upon poorly. Aged worse, Griffin was last seen playing pro hockey in Ireland.

I don't think giving up the 13th for Dach was bad, but do you think it's possible your assessment of Kotka is influenced by what you saw of him in Montreal and the circumstances around his departure? Genuinely curious. I haven't seen enough of Dach or Kotka to gauge the difference between the two at this stage, and I'd be jaded as hell if my team wasted a 3rd on basically nothing.

I'll be honest I was really high on KK throughout his entire tenure with MTL. But once he left for Carolina, i felt relieved that I didn't have to defend him anymore with blind optimism. Was just frustrating because as a 3rd overall, we were all hoping he would turn into our own Kopitar (those were the comparisons at the beginning lol). Instead he often looked like Bambi out there, but that was also in part of how our front office handled his development i'm sure.

I would have loved to see how KK would have developed under our current management. For me if he can just fix his skating and strength/balance, he'd be a lot more effective. He's also got a wicked hard shot that just needs some work on his release, and he does go to the dirty areas in the corners/in front of the net. So there is still something there to work with but I'm just exhausted personally. Time will tell if these issues are something he can fix, otherwise I see him capping out as a 3rd liner which isn't bad.

Dach I need to see a lot more of as well. Fresh start under St.Louis should do him well. We'll see. I'm just hoping injuries are a thing of the past because like i said - I love his toolbox. Big, good skating, right handed C. Lots to love there
