Wanted to post an update on this kid, but found there was no thread.

Started off the season somewhat slow, but has 6 points in his last 3 games to give him 11 points in 16 games on the season.
Stanley already has good size, standing at 6’2” - is very mobile, something that he uses to good effect in transition. He has a real Good shot from the point, when he has the puck at the blue line the defence always has to be on their toes because he loves to shoot. He needs to work on his defensive consistency and at times I find he could be more physical.
Nonetheless should be a kid to keep an eye on this year.

Victoria is on a 4 Game losing streak. I'm hoping they'll be able to get out of that slump so Draft prospects like Stanley can flourish again.

I'm going to a Grizzlies game on saturday (I now regret not going to games when we had Newhook lol), and I'll be doing some scouting on Stanley and the 5'10" goalie we have lol.

I can see what you mean of him being mobile, as he made everyone on Cowichan look they were standing still on one play!


It's scary how he looked more offensively gifted than any forward that night! (even if he only scored 1 assist, but that's because he has to play his defensive role most of the time.) Definitely worth the pickup in the Mid Draft Rounds this year.

Seems like a safe selection. Has a wide ranging skillset from playing a solid stay-at-home defenseman to a mobile puckmoving D. No real standout or elite traits, but shows enough of everything when combined with his size and skating to make a safe projection of a bottom pairing defenseman with room for growth.

The great thing he has going for him? He was one of the best Dmen in a good league, and he already has an NHL body. Those things alone, likley get you drafted.

As for the BCHL knock, with him it’s justified. He’s pretty easy to breakdown, as he’s very simple in his own zone. The league is getting more talent today than ever before, but you’re still playing against a lot of kids who this is their last stop in their hockey career. So no, he hasn’t played against too many top flight forwards, but he’ll get his chance. His reach keeps a lot of players outside, which is much easier to do at lower levels. Not sure he’s aggressive enough one on one, when he’s being attacked. He collapses too much and his instincts are pretty basic in his own zone. Or at least when they opposition has the puck.

Where he’s good is more transitionally and in the other two zones. That’s where his instincts take over and you say wow, there’s something there.. he’s not thinking but reacting. Once he has the puck he does some nice things. He sees the ice much better from that standpoint. Dmen almost always read the ice better than forwards and he has that quality. He knows what to do with the puck after he and his team gain possession. He puts himself in position to be part of the attack. So he’s good without the puck too, and it’s instinctive.

He’s going to get every opportunity with his size in college. Needs a lot of development to play pro hockey though. Hate to pick a spot, as he’s the type you pick, guide him a little with what he needs to work on, and keep tabs on him from a distance.

Cornell Head Coach Mike Schafer really loves those big blueliners from the BCHL. I should get to see him at least a couple times next year against Clarkson.
