D core 6’0 and shorter VS 6’1 and taller

There was a comment in an earlier thread about how 5’11 is undersized for a current defenseman. I then looked at the average height of the current NHL defenseman is 6’1. The first thing I thought of when looking at defenseman on the smaller side was Makar and then Fox. Then looked at the top 4 defensemen today and couldn’t decide if I was starting a team today who I would rather have. Hedman and Josi or Makar and Fox. Then looked at all time defenseman and in my eyes many of the top 15 being 6’0 or shorter with the majority of the top 10 being under.

Now the speed of the game is getting faster again so how important is size. Could u get away with an entire defensive core with every defenseman under 6’0 if their skill and defensive ability is at the top of the game?

If you have a brand new team starting today and get to pick from one of these defensive units who do you take?

Hedman - Lidstrom

Robinson - Chelios

Josi - Pronger



6’0 or shorter

Makar - Orr

Bourque- Harvey

Potvin - Fox

Apart from handedness, he's at least a good representation of Nicklas' stature at 6'2" 190lb.

You want your Dmen as big as possible. That way they're much more likely to get away with clean stiff elbows to the head, That will give you a huge competitive edge once the playoffs roll around...
