Over the last five Olympics (since widespread NHL participation), the cumulative records of the big 6 in games against other big 6:

Sweden 9-4
Canada 9-6-1
Finland 10-9
Russia 8-8-1
USA 6-10-1
Czech 5-10-1

A few things that stood out for me:
1) only 47 games over five Olympics. An average of about 3 games per team per Olympics. There just aren't enough games among the power countries.

2) Czechs have really struggled. Since their 4-1 performance in 98, they are 1-9-1, with the only win being in the bronze medal game in 06.

3) Due to playoff losses to non power 6 teams, Sweden's medal count (a silver and a bronze) not as good as would be expected for a team with their overall record in big 6 games.

Expanding to include Slovakia (I have them at 5-7 rather than 5-7-1. When was their tie?):

Can 10-6-1
Swe 9-6
Fin 11-9
Rus 9-10-1
Cze 8-10-1
Svk 5-7
USA 7-11-1

cool stuff...

if you would add world cup 2004 it would give +
Canada 6-0
USA 2-3
Russia 2-2
Slovakia 0-4
Finland 2-1-1
Sweden 1-1-1
Czech 1-3

=to decmas stats

Canada 16-6-1
Finland 13-10-1
Russia 11-12-1
Sweden 10-7-1
Czech 9-13-1
USA 9-14-1
Slovakia 5-11

-----
Canada +10
Finland +3
Sweden +3
Russia -1
Czech -4
USA -5
Slovakia -6

Well, i guess many Swedish guys would swap that impressive record against a win against Belarus in 2002:naughty::D

2014. They lost in shootout to Russia. So...

2014: 0-2-1 (losses to US and CZE, ot loss to RUS)
2010: 2-3-0 (wins to RUS and SWE, losses to CZE, CAN, and FIN)
2006: 3-1-0 (wins to RUS, SWE, and US, loss to CZE
1998+2002: Weren't allowed NHLers for stupid play in tournament, failed to qualify.

Appears I miscalculated. 5-6-1.

That is actually quite impressive. I mean for all 7 teams. Shows how strong all the nations are.

Kinda surprising how Canada does not have a better record considering they won several times.

Funny..... That is the kind of parity you expect in the Cap NHL not Internationally.

Unfortunately, you won't see this kind of results from Slovakia anytime soon.
Our team on paper as of today can't even be compared to the one which played in Vancouver.

In my opinion it is a bit misleading if you include the preliminary round games since they are more or less warm up games. If you look at the QF, SF, F games amongst the top six since '98 and include the '04 W Cup you get:

CAN 8W 2L
FIN 6W 6L
SWE 3W 3L
CZE 4W 5L
USA 4W 6L
RUS 3W 6L

You have to play well in the preliminary rounds to get into the medal rounds so those numbers must be included. Nothing misleading whatsoever.

Not suprised by Finland's numbers being so high.

For the top 6 teams the preliminary round is basically the equivalent of the preseason in league play. In the tournaments I mentioned the top 6 teams were all guaranteed of making the playoffs, with the exception of the 2006 format (and even then it was pretty much a sure thing). The top 6 don't have to play well in those games, they are just warm ups for the real thing.

I dunno, outside of '06 I think the formats have been pretty bad, but I don't think anyone enters a game not caring about the result and it's not like there's nothing at stake... Getting a bye in the knockout rounds and/or a significantly easier opponent (at least on paper) in the QF would provide motivation. In Canada's case the players and staff not having to spend a couple of days answering an endless line of questions on why they lost a 'meaningless' prelim round game should provide plenty of motivation.

I am not saying its not important, but they mostly serve as a test of lines etc.,especially on BOB tourneys where is basically no time for preparation. For example somebody mentioned here WC04 which brought CZ stats 1-3. One would say that it was a horrible tourney for CZ,, however, in last two matches we played probably our best hockey in first half of that decade .......

I'm not saying anyone wants to lose, but the prelim games are mostly the time for the team to try and gel and sometimes playing the extra game helps.

You certainly undressed us in that quarter final. I had my hopes up with the score 0-2 after first and even 0-3 after the second, but we could not do anything about it. It was like meeting Team Canada Sochi 2014. Coach should have played Lundqvist over Tellqvist though. It was time.

:) It just shows how everything has changed during next 11 years. Despite its horrible format WC16 will be a crucial tournament for us. If we dont show at least the ability to play equal game with other top teams, there will be no top six anymore IMO. The results have been horrible from 2010 and there is no sign this should change soon....

Actually, I would say that it seems like your youth teams are going the right way, or? I know that you are complaining about the senior team, but I don't see your future that negatively.

I would even dare to say our best hockey since Nagano.

It is still hard to predict, the talent pool is not really wide. Somebody tried to put OG 2022 roster together. However there are not enough young players to fill this roster......
