As a 16 year old...

Mario Lemieux: 64 GP, 30 G, 66 A, 96 pts.
Sidney Crosby: 29 GP, 27 G, 40 A, 67 pts.

Mario at 17: 66 GP, 84 G, 100 A, 184 pts.
Mario at 18: 70 GP, 133 G, 149 A, 282 pts.

I'd be shocked to see him do what Mario did in his next two years though. If he does, more power to him.

Anyone think he can beat Mario's numbers as a 17- and 18-year old in this day of more defensively responsible hockey?

Also, to those who get to see Sidney play... does everyone feed him the puck all the time the way the Penguins do for Mario, or is he really earning every point on pure talent? Not that Mario doesn't earn his, it's just that it's easier to score points when people are always looking to pass to you.

Well the thing about it is that Crosby is in his rookie year, but next year is his draft year. If he jumps directly out of juniors (the general consensus) he will have only played 2 Q years. Hence I think he will split things with Mario because he has a bit more experience. I think He'll fall somewhere between Mario's 96 & 184 points year this season. And then next year somewhere between 184 & 282.

But hey he's a prospect everything could change.

Wasn't Laval one of the worst teams in the league when Mario debuted there though?

They were at the bottom the year before he got there and .500 in his first year, so yes.

Crosby does get fed the puck alot, but he is a pass first type of guy so he creates things then sets up his guys...but also he is able to get by and pure talent as well, he is one of the best guys in the CHL for being able to steal the puck from guys and take it in after that.

Am I wrong or will the fact that Crosby was born in August prevent him from playing 3 years in the Q like Mario was able to because of his October birthday?

If you want a comparison he looks like a better Peter Forsberg ,but Crosby is a better goal scorer.

hard to compare different eras, but I'm not sure Mario would have had as much support as Crosby appears to in terms of team depth.
Certainly no Pouliot...
Lemieux played with future NHLers like JJ Daigneault and Claude Vilgrain his rookie year, Bobby Dollas, Steven Finn 2nd year and Vince Damphousse was a rookie his last season....
we'll see who Crosby gets to play with in time and by the time we can make a more accurate decision on junior experience hopefully we'll be comparing NHL stats.

I never realized that Mario had an improvement of almost 100 pts per year for the 3 years he played in the Q. Not too bad... :joker:

Pouliot just played 16 games so far this year and when he plays he doesnt play with Crosby.

danny Stewart and Zbybek Hrdel were his linemates before Pouliot, Hrdel, Lemaire and Neilson get injured

I love this kid, but I don't see anyone popping 282  points in 70g

Could you really see a 16-year old kid popping 30 goals and 72 points in 30 games?

He leads the whole league by at least 20 points (in 30 games). If they continue at this pace, that's equivalent to a player leading the NHL with a 161 points (to Forsberg's 106 last year).

That's true. I expected a 100 point season (many people seemed to think that was far fetched itself) but I didn't expect him to be leading the league at this point. Who knows at this point what Crosby is capable of and will be capable of next year and after that.

I don't see him posting 282 points. Can he do it? I think he can. Will he do it? No. Why? As an 18 year old he will be up in the NHL, or if he is back in junior as an 18 year old he will have more responsibilty on playing defense.
