K so name things that the 19 year old Crosby did better on the ice than he does now. Also vice versa.

This is not one of those black and white questions you can answer by ticking down a list. Crosby is the type of player who will work on any percieved flaw and make himself among the best in the game at it. Mediocre at faceoffs? He works the summer and becomes one of the best at it. Remember 'secondary assist Sid' or 'Ovechkin is better because goals are worth more than assists'? He works the summer and becomes one of the best, if not the best, goal scorer in the league.

So I would so nothing was better with the 19 year old Sid, except younger legs and had not been injured, which has made him, rightly, mix it up less and go looking for scrums less.

Now- Goal scoring

Then - assists

Like I said above, Crosby has not regressed in playmaking, he merely chose to score more. That is the difference between him and other elite players. I am sure if for the hell of it he decided to go back to playmaking he would not have lost anything over the 19 year old Crosby, in fact the current version would obviously have developed more by now. I doubt he has lost much of a step at age 25 for that to be a factor.

He has no one to playmake to.

Move aside that other than Hossa he pretty consistently has not had anyone, the question of quality wings is irrelevant as it does not answer whether he was a better playmaker at age 19 than now.

I feel like 19 year old Sid was more of a bull that was fearless. Sid definitely doesn't go as hard an ymore.

I don't think 19 year old Crosby did anything better than 25 year old Crosby(and I think the same applies for pretty much all athletes). Foot speed maybe but it's a pretty negligible difference. Especially when compared to his drastic improvements in his shot release/accuracy, strength, faceoffs, etc.

Even his interviews have gotten better. He is never going to shoot his mouth off, but he is far less vanilla than he was when he came into the league:

2012:

I think he crossed the blue line and drove in on defensemen better back then.

He was also better at picking up pucks at the right side of the net on the PP.

Imo

Now
Better at Faceoffs
Better at Goalscoring
More Mature

19
Faster
Better handles

Can someone emmbed this?

Crosby sucks :sarcasm:

Yeah, you definitely don't see him going through the whole team like he does multiple times in that video, or the absolutely insane puck control behind the net. He still does a bit, but other teams just rub him out instead of trying to stick check.

Way too much Nils Ekman in that video though :shakehead

Now: Everything
Then: Nothing

The one thing about Crosby at 19 y/o is that there was still a bunch of those lumbering trees still kicking around from the "old NHL" like Derian Hatcher, Ludwig, Rathje, and a host of even less talented giant pylons. Today, all those guys are gone and replaced with either guys who can skate or, even more scary, just as big & tough and can also skate.

Crosby has the same top speed but he's quicker. His first few steps are lightyears ahead of where he was.

imo Crosby is not quicker. He may have the same top speed but he is not as shifty.

Crosby vs. Crosby

For some reason the first thing that came to mind was

Too bad Million Dollar Man didn't show up with an imposter Crosby when Sid was out with the concussion. :sarcasm:

i was going to say the opposite. his top-end speed is probably the same, but his first few steps/acceleration aren't were they were when he first came into the league, imo.

So we're so bored of the Crosby vs. Malkin comparisons that we're now going to compare these guys to themselves at various points.

Crosby is nitpicked enough by fans and media.

Agree here.

Although, it could be argued that he wasted a lot of energy when he first came into the league and has compensated with better anticipation.

He's bulked up some so the speed thing is rather obvious but since his concussion problems, the thing he will continue to progress on his his fearlessness. Pre-Concussion, he could go into any corner with any defender and come out with the puck. You see flashes of it but he's not where he wants to be. Once he gets the games in and some hits in, it should come back to him though.

The obvious are faceoffs and his shot/goal scoring ability. Much improved from his 19 year old self.
