Crosby as an Ambassador for the Game

during the recent barrage of draft coverage i heard prospects mention Crosby more than a few times. of course it makes sense that younger players admire his game, but i was surprised by how much interaction Crosby has with prospects. most of it makes sense based on the places he's been: Nova Scotia, Shattuck, the Q, the fraternity of Number One picks - he's got a lot of connections to hockey-mad places, so it's no surprise that he'd do what he needs to do to maintain his relationship with those regions/entities, but on the surface it looks like he's doing more than his fair share to help and encourage 'the next ones'. do you feel this is true? are there any other instances that come to mind? is this just par for the course for an athlete of his statute/renown?

Hunter Shinkaruk

Hunter Shinkaruk practied with Crosby for two weeks last summer in Los Angeles, getting the surreal experience of working out with his favorite player. Soon enough, he may get to play against him.

"I know him fairly well, but to play him in a game would be something that would be pretty cool," Shinkaruk said. "It was unbelievable (playing with him). The first time, we were in a 3-on-3, and I just kind of stopped, like, 'holy cow, I'm playing against Sidney Crosby.' I'm very lucky to have those experiences, and he's a great guy and I learned a lot for him. Hopefully one day I'll be playing against him in the NHL."

Frédéric Gauthier

In a roundabout way, the Maple Leafs can thank a phone call last summer from Sidney Crosby for being able to draft centre Frederik Gauthier with their first-round pick on Sunday.

Gauthier was having trouble deciding whether to play major junior or go to Harvard, where a scholarship awaited.

Then the phone rang. Gauthier’s mom answered, a little surprised to hear Crosby — who played major junior for Rimouski — at the other end.
“He talked to me about Rimouski and the experiences he had there,†said Gauthier. “He told me how great it was when he was there.
“After this year, I can say he was right.â€

Nathan MacKinnon

Eight years Crosby’s junior, MacKinnon has nonetheless become close with the Pittsburgh Penguins’ captain, who was the first pick after the NHL’s last comeback from a lockout, in 2005.

And one of the first people MacKinnon heard from after going No. 1 was Crosby.

“He wished me luck,†he said.

There’s a Colorado tie-in to their story, too. As chance would have it, Crosby’s arrival in the NHL, when MacKinnon was just 10, caused him to switch allegiances from the Avs to the Penguins.

“I loved Sid, and he was my favourite player,†MacKinnon said. “I guess he’s still my favourite player. I don’t really know what to say now [that we’re in the same league].â€

Connor McDavid

“Unbelievable,†McDavid said. “It was unbelievable just to see him and get to talk to him. He is my idol and my role model. To meet him was a dream come true.â€

The Penguins invited McDavid, along with Erie teammates Stephen Harper and Hayden Hodgsen, to Sunday's game. Although the trio was told it would receive a tour of Consol Energy Center, nothing was said about seating arrangements.

Not long before game time, the teenagers were escorted into a private box.
Lemieux was there waiting for them.

“Totally crazy,†McDavid said. “To watch a hockey game with Mario Lemieux, I mean, it was just crazy.â€

i'm sure there are more articles like these out there. for as much crap as Sid and Mario take, it's nice to hear that they are doing what they can to encourage young, talented players...

Don't think Shero will appreciate Sid steering Gauthier away from the NCAA ranks. Maybe if he would of mentored Michael Gergen, things would of turned out differently.

better add the :sarcasm: to be safe

Not me. I just deleted his (presumably sarcastic) potentially thread-derailing comment. I haven't been around most of the day. Trying to get back to this thing called productivity M-F.

Its good to hear players talk good about Sid. Some great players can't even captain their team but Sid put in the time and effort to almost captain the league.

I hated the way some teams, players and coaches run a smear campaign on Sid. Back in 08 I almost crashed my car listening to Dave Mallony from the Rangers talk about Sid saying how he doesn't understand why he gets superstar treatment from the NHL. Nevermind the garbage tossed out there but Hitch, Tortorella and Semin.

Sid is almost too good to be true. The guy routinely gets goaded by reporters into falling into some kind of trap where they can spin his quote and he doesn't bite. He's polite. He doesn't have a big head. He has a nasty side but only on the ice. Love this guy. So happy we have him signed to a 12 year contract.

I never got the hatred, and worse lack of respect for his talent (but look at the HART TROPHYS!), that he gets at HF and a few other places. He just seems like a genuinely, and almost uniquely among athletes with that kind of talent, nice mature guy.

Jealousy.

Also he'd get less crap from other fanbases' if the Pens weren't a powerhouse. Being on a good team doesn't help.

Sid seems to have practiced with anyone playing hockey in NA.

People dislike Crosby because he is very good and not on their favorite team. I hate Tom Brady for this same reason.

Sports aren't logical. Sport fans don't need reason. We are cheering for men skating around hitting a piece of rubber with sticks. Nothing about sports fandom is logical.

The reason people dislike Crosby has absolutely nothing to do with anything he does OFF the ice.

Wrong. He's no more a whiner/diver then a majority of others and he's extremly competitive and in the spotlight more then most, so it just seems like he's worse then others in that aspect. Although when it comes to promoting Crosby, that can turn people off constantly have him down the throat when there should be more players promoted on TV for the game of hockey.

no, its true. His on ice play is why he is hated. He is the best player in the league and not on their team. That is exactly why most people hate him. That is why they look for every little thing they can find to nit pick about. Overpromotion is just bonus. If Sidney Crosby wasn't as good as he is, he wouldn't be hated.

as mentioned in the OP, i'd love to see snippets of interviews and quotes that describe other players' interactions and opinions of him (as opposed to hearing opposing fans continue to gripe about his over-exposure and perceived lack of composure)
