I heard Craig Button's top 10 list for this upcoming draft on the NHL Network's NHL on the Fly. This isn't to be taken as gospel, but Craig has been around the scouting community for a long time, and the man does have a clue as to what he is talking about.

His list really doesn't throw too much interesting picks out there, but I am sure some will be questioned.

Here was his top 10.

1. Tyler Seguin
2. Taylor Hall
3. Cam Fowler
4. Brandon Gormley
5. Brett Connolly
6. Kirill Kabanov
7. John McFarland
8. Vladimir Tarasenko
9. Riley Sheahan
10. Jack Campbell

Now I am obviously going to disagree with McFarland being that high, but Craig was very big on him and his character. I don't know if he has done enough to get drafted that high, but you never know.

Two Russians in the top 8?? I agree, as they both are talented enough to be there, but will someone take that high of a chance on Tarasenko?

Craig is also very high on Jack Campbell, as well as the majority of the scouting community. I still have no doubts that he is the first goalie that gets picked, the only question is when.

It was interesting to hear him describe Hall and Seguin. Craig compared Hall to Pierre Turgeon and Seguin to Shanahan. Turgeon and Shanahan were from the same draft, and if Hall and Seguin can be anything like those two players were, look out. He is a tad higher on Seguin right now, but he said between Hall, Seguin, and Fowler; he honestly can see all three of them as #1 picks.

Overall it is nothing earth shattering, but it was nice to hear some more indepth reports of this draft....take it for what its worth.

Look at his draft record when he was the Flames GM and that will tell you how credible his list is

I saw this title and expected an absolute laugher...but its not too bad. Looks pretty good for the most part.

Yeah, at first glance I thought the thread would be comical, how bad a judge of talent do you have to be to stop getting work? Thanks for wieghing in Craig:laugh:

Craig Button=Marc Savard for Ruslan Zainullan
Yes, I know, that trade has been talked to death, but it's hard to take this guy's opinion seriously because of it. Kinda like asking Charles Wang's advice on long term contracts.

he's high on McFarland character but you ask someone else and you hear something like "1st rd talent but 7th rd attitute"

would like to know what the real deal with McFarland ? again i remember i heard some bad thing about Getzlaf character back in junior and the rest his history....

clearly McFarland one of the biggest wildcard in this year draft

I like the list. I actually pretty much agree with the whole thing. I'd flip-flop #2 and #3, but the rest of it seems dead on. Campbell in the top 10, no Gudbranson, very solid.

"1st rd talent but 7th rd attitute"

That's my opinion of him, but haven't watched him live yet this year. Maybe he's been working harder for his draft year.

See the biggest problem with the attitude issues in juniors are that these are still young adults and popular hockey players (especially in Canada). Some people grow up and mature and their attitude issues go away, but other players they can't shake those problems. It's a guessing game really. As you said, he's a real wildcard.

I really hope Dallas doesn't finish low this year but Jack Campbell would be a nice consolation prize.

you got it....he is an idiot

well the guy is still getting paid for his "worthless" opinion, so I would assume he is doing something right.

Just because he has made some bad trades, does not mean the guy still can't judge talent. He has been around a long time in the scouting community, and as I said this isn't gospel, but his list isn't that bad.

I still can see someone taking McFarland that high, I just know I wouldn't be the gm.

I agree the list sucks but to be fair these arent his projected ranking of where the players will go but of how successful he thinks their respective NHL careers will be when all is said and done.

He has fallen out of a lot of people's good grace since the World Juniors. Also, I am here to point out the stereotypical Finnish poster championing his Finnish prospect.

He fell out of a lot of peoples good graces well before the WJC. He just didn't do anything to get it back up there.

As for McFarland, he was captain of Canada's U-18 team if I recall correctly (either that or he had an amazing showing, possibly both, again bad memory on a Saturday). I've not heard anything about any character problems.

Not everyone has to be so dismissive of Button. True, he failed miserably as a GM, but part of the reason he was hired by Calgary in the first place was because he was known for years as one of the best scouts in hockey. Some guys are just meant for certain things and not others I guess...

Campbell in the top 10 is too much. Its not the best ranking but its always a good thing to get another opinion. hockeyprospect.com ranking is awful

Campbell could really go anywhere from 15 to 30 imo. Depends on the needs and what other players are available.

Campbell is clearly amongst the top 10 talents in the Draft, so I don't get your point.

Common!!!! Campbell is clearly the Top Goaltender of the draft but never a top 10 and not in the TOP 15. But that said, we never know when you're a desperate team like Dallas

There is nothing clear about it - and if there a re question marks, a goalies position will fall because he plays goalie. I would expect to see him around 15-20 to a team like Philly or NYR.

WHAT?

What question marks? The kid has been a start at every level he's played, he's been a star in every tournament he's played in, he has sound fundamentals, plays angles really well, handles the puck well, his reflexes and recovery are off the charts, and he just led the US to a Gold medal as a 17 year old. Just because he's not Canadian doesn't mean there are any "question marks" to his game.

If someone doesn't trade up into the top 10 to get him, I'll be shocked. Outside the top three, there isn't anyone in this draft with the ability to have as much impact with as little potential downside as Jack Campbell.
