Haven't done one in awhile, and with all the draft fever let's take a look :P

Context: This was very much in Maloney's
xVyoSl.jpg

phase.

Before bottoming out, but still kinda aimlessly floundering after the WCF run. We did trade Rundblad for a 2nd. Pick 87 and 117 were acquired by trading #73 to Montreal so a trade down netted a pick.

We took:
Pick#Name
12Brendan Perlini
43Ryan MacInnis
58Christian Dvorak
87Anton Karlsson
117Michael Bunting
133Dysin Mayo
163David Westlund
191Jared Fiegl
193Edgars Kulda
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

My take:
Perlini is ROUGH for 12OA even in a meh draft. MacInnis was a pure Maloney wasted bloodline pick. Dvo worked out very well :). Mayo was a decent AHL body for awhile. Bunting seems to be doing something lately.

My heart says D, my head says C. Dvo is the kinda value we should have also gotten out of #12 so instead of this draft being a homerun success it's not great because we screwed up the 1st.

Perlini looked like a good player until the LA Kings broke his wrist in the prospect tourney with a slash. Wasn't ever the same after that.

Karlsson was considered a 1st round pick at one point but slid, never even came over.

MacInnis pick was mediocre at the time and although he looked good with Kitchener he just never took the next step once he hit the AHL.

Dvorak pick was a brilliant read on an injured player. I hope that scout is still with the organization.

Best memory is Maloney not remembering Kulda's name when asked.

One of my biggest missed takes was that Kulda was going to be a diamond in the rough. I was impressed with him at the memorial cup (he was mvp) and since he played with Henrik Samuelsson, I thought we had something there.

Hard not to go with a B even if we whiffed on our first two picks. McInnis also had a fantastic D+1 and 2 seasons. He was a very promising prospect that unfortunately couldn't produce in the next level. I believe he has played some NHL games with Lumbus as well, so not a complete bust. Karlsson had some promise as well as Mayo. Mayo seems to be helping Tucson at the very least. Kulda was very entertaining and somewhat exciting for a minute too. This was the draft that gave me some confidence that we could make selections out of the 1st round. Even Perlini being out of the league already had some decent games and flashed the skill that he was drafted for.

IIRC I was hoping for Ehlers to fall, and by pick 10 I was hoping for Honka, but would have also reached for DeAngelo. I know I was not enamored by the forwards after Ehlers was selected, although rt had me on the Fabbri train. Looking back at the 1st round, it was a much deeper draft than it was originally touted. Some decent hits in the 2nd too.

Also, we got Dvo through the Rundblad 2nd (Turris for Dvo in the end.)

Would love to do these from 2013 on.

Edit: Went with a C. Would do C+ if I could or B-. Missing out on so many players right behind Perlini is what ultimately drops it. If there was only 2-3 worthwhile picks after him in the 1st this would have been a B.

Wow looking at the 1st round of the 2013 draft and it's night and day compared to 2014 even though many thought it was superior. The high end talent of 2013 if there in Barkov, Jones and McKinnon but it falls off pretty significantly after pick 16.

I'm not going to vote for a grade, but all other teams (except the two who got them) missed hard on Pasta and Point. This is not bad drafting by the Yotes, in particular with thin resources. Even if Larkin might have been an obvious theme at the 12th pick, but as pointed out, Perlini might be a superstar in an alternative reality.

I would go E on this draft .. Dvorak is great for a second r pick . Bunting may turn out good but very small sample size... Very typical Coyote Draft... May actually be better because of Dvo

This may be a D but I have been a Coyote / Jets fan for way too long so a little on the neg side.

Edit : I see there is no E... so a reluctant D ..

Those Oil Kings teams fooled so many scouts and GMs. Laxdal should be an NHL coach.

Meh - I dont want to give it a decent grade but Dvorak is 17th in that draft for GP, 13th for goals, 16th for points and that's not even his strong point. rt is right, he basically is what we want from the 12th pick.

For me it hinges on whether Bunting is for real as to whether it's a B or C draft. Bunting and Mayo are #1 and #2 in all time games played for Tucson.

I guess if you follow the Kraken you will find out.
