That's an extremely green lineup down the middle for what's supposed to be the turning point year in the rebuild. Again I'm not pounding the table here saying we absolutely NEED to sign Evans but I don't think we should be assuming in September 2024 that a 2021 and 2022 draftee will be good NHL centers from day one for a team that's ostensibly going to be trying to climb the standings.

Having Beck/Kapanen or Evans on the 4th line isn't going to make much of a difference to the habs making the playoffs. The impact of a 4th line center is limited.

I think they're going to dump one of Anderson or Gallagher this summer (likely Anderson), and I think it's premature to just assume that Beck and Kapanen will seamlessly adjust as our 3/4Cs from day one. This time last year, everyone would have been including RHP in all these projections and now he's an afterthought. Roy or Newhook could easily be part of a trade for a big name RD at the draft or next summer too. Even Suzuki didn't start out as a C in the NHL. These things don't really pan out like clockwork and there are always going to be injuries.

RHP is a small winger drafted in the 7th round as an overager and is now 25 years old. Beck and Kapanen are both good-sized 2-way centers who are great on faceoffs and were drafted in the 2nd round. The pedigree/value of RHP and Beck/Kapanen are nowhere near the same.

Beck and Kapanen don't need to be a perfect 3C/4C to be in the NHL. They will be rookies, so there will be ups and downs. Slafkovsky, Xhekaj, Roy, etc. weren't perfect players when they made the nhl.

I agree about Dvorak or Armia because I don't like the fit they provide, but I can totally see the case for Evans and Savard. We're not gonna run Reinbacher Mailloux Barron on the right side next year and if Savard doesn't seem to be slowing down too aggressively I could see the case for something on a 1-2 year term at a lower dollar figure.

We're not going to run Reinbacher Mailloux Barron on the right side because one of Guhle or Matheson will be on the right side.

Guhle - Matheson
Hutson - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Mailloux

Reinbacher, Mailloux, Engstrom, Trudeau, Struble, and Barron are all knocking on the door, and Savard will be blocking one of them, and probably won't even be better.

We're not going to ice an entire lineup of U25 players outside of Suzuki and Laine, they're going to sign some veteran depth players even if they aren't Evans and Savard specifically.

They aren't going to sign old players who will block prospects from making the team. That's pretty clear with what Hughes has been saying to the media.
There is also already veteran depth players signed for multiple more years on the team in Anderson and Gallagher.

I'm curious to see how Evans will perform as a 4th line center with 4th line center minutes plus PK duties.
Special teams may make or break our season so I hope he's up for the challenge.
Suffice it to say the last time he was cast in that role he wasn't very good at all.

Are all the players busts now, or what ?

Dobes was great.

Watching him last night and remembering back to the start of last year with Laval and that's a massive improvement in my books.

Guy actually stays in his net when moving side-to-side. He could he ready this year for the backup role, but next year for sure the way he's looked.

Why would Evans sign a contract with the habs without being guaranteed a top-12 role? Plenty of teams in free agency will guarantee him that role...

Evans isn't a player that rotates in and out of the lineup like Pezzetta. He's a legitimate top 12 forward that should be playing 82 games per year.
on a bottom-feeding team. does not hit does not score is a total vanilla jersey filler on one of the crappiest teams in the nhl. He should take the money and smile all the way to the bank. As a fan I promise I don’t pay for tickets and cable to see guys that « don’t hurt the team ». Neither do my house plants.

If habs are going to suck at least provide entertainment.

pk sucks with him as does the pp with current unit. Wipe the board clean and reset for real, don’t just make a marketing Crave series about it.

Expecting some cuts today

With only 3 preseason games left, and the final two games are mostly the full line-up with some guys who impress and have a legit chance to earn a spot. So today and after Saturday's game, almost everyone who will play in Laval will get cut.

The guys who played last night: Engstrom, Tuch, Kidney, Dobes, Hughes, and I believe Gignac will be on waivers. My guess is that Reinbacher, Beck, Kapanen, and ABB will play on Saturday also.

Not sure if someone has brought up yet but looks like 5 Habs games will be on the new Amazon Prime streaming of hockey
. Not sure how it will work with region rights etc.

Dobes looks good. Would suck to lose him on waivers.

Gotta lineup a goon squad against sens. Get all the big boys in. Sit all the good players we have.

They're probably participating in an unofficial minor league camp. Montreal always holds the 2 simultaneously until the official Laval camp opens, which should be soon. Sometime today through Monday the Laval team will branch off to hold their own camp/practices.

Unless they are needed by their respective team's training camps, we can expect them to be still training with the club?

They were supposed to do it yesterday according to Martineau.... Change of plan I guess.

Marty probably wanted to sleep on it and then talk it through with Hughes and Gorton today.

We know one of the few interesting nuggets from The Rebuild is Marty likes to take some time and let the emotions of the game wash away.

That's great news, 1st of all October 14th is Canadian Thanksgiving and a statutory holiday, so a more interesting Monday game than most.

I suggest to anyone who has Amazon Prime to tune in if at all possible, show them decent ratings so they acquire more rights in the future. It's much more appealing to have Amazon Prime showcase Habs game for 9.99 a month than pay for cable in Canada with a 60/100$ bundle to our telecom oligarch overlords.
