Now to be clear I don't want them to start 11 forwards and 7 D but if they did it solves the cap issues.

The Leafs are just above 2 million over the cap.

Robertson, Gambrell and Holmberg combined are just under 2.4 million.

They would get Toronto under the cap.

I'd hate to do it because Holmberg is good enough to be on this team.

But not doing that means waiving Timmins and he showed real promise last year and I don't want to see him traded or waived

It seems like an option to be considered (at least for however long it can feasibly last).

I'm predicting we go 9 and 9 by December.

God I hate 11-7, but at least it isn't to give more time to Malgin, Kerfoot, and Holl.

I hate it too but if it gets them under the cap without having to weaken the roster then it might need to be done.

We'll have to determine if that pattern manages to cease upon the arrival of his next opportunity.

He needs to change his game, he needs to stop battling for pucks in the corners, he can't do it.

But, unlike in the recent past, the Leafs have more players on contracts that are waiver exempt, so they can easily shuffle some bodies in and out. Sending Nick Robertson and Pontus Holmberg down to the Marlies gets Toronto to within $472,000 of being compliant, for example.

(That figure may be why they were wishing they could get Samsonov signed for closer to $3 million, in a perfect world.)

From there, the Leafs would need one more cut to get under the cap. Matthew Knies can go down without waivers, which feels unlikely to happen, given how well he played late last season, but could be a maneuver they use in a short-term situation.

Or, they could place Conor Timmins, Dylan Gambrell and/or Sam Lafferty on waivers and get under the cap that way.

In fact, if they cut or trade Timmins and Lafferty, who make a combined $2.25 million that is fully AHL buriable, they can carry an extra forward or defenseman to start the year, provided that extra makes $1 million or less.

Which could look something like so … with just $15,000 left in breathing room. (I’m sure capologist Brandon Pridham will find a way to get it closer. Last season they entered the year with just $4 in cap space.)

These are all theoretical lineups designed to get the Leafs under the cap. I don’t actually foresee them waiving an established NHL player like Lafferty, given he would have value in a trade.

But the point is the Leafs have a variety of options here, and we’ve seen them enter the season in the past with a league-minimum 18 skaters on the roster. That may be necessary again this fall.

It's looking like the Leafs well thought out cap structure will force them to run a short roster again this year.

If that's the case they should split the talent up. Complimentary players don't get paid tens of millions of dollars. Having watched the Leafs repeatedly cater to their star players, turning them into these spoiled selfish divas we see today, I don't expect that to happen though.

If these guys don't play together they'll revolt.

It's amazing how fast their attitudes went from youthful enthusiasm to entitlement. The team is embroiled in a culture of high wages and privilege. The result of indifferent corporate ownership.

Coupled with a roster of "me first" hockey players.

It's because of their demands the team can't ice a full roster. They should all be driving their own lines. Or Treliving should be driving them to an airport.

Let some other team pay them eight figures a year to ride shotgun with the real stars.

Assuming full health. It looks like they don't have much of a choice. You would think they would protect Timmins over McMann from the waiver wire.

At forward you could make a good argument that Robertson and Holmberg are out ahead of McMann on the depth chart. They're waiver exempt though, which makes it likely that they're sent down to start the season to protect one of the other two.

Send Gambell, Robertson, Holmberg and Jones down and that's just under 3.3 million.

Losing Jones would suck but I just can't see a 27 game winner getting through waivers especially with Tampa bay needing a back

He needs to adjust his game for sure but puck battles are a big part of his game. Imho he needs to learn his position and stop puck chasing like a junior player. He gets chasing and forgets where he needs to be away too often. I’m not sure if he’ll ever figure it out personally, he’s young but and still might but you need more than just a shot
