Polo might be more expensive
Water polo is even more expensive. Do you know how expensive it is to teach horses to swim?

Only if the NBA crashed and burned and was replaced by a different basketball league that was still more popular than the NHL.
I wouldn’t mind it if the NBA crashed and burned. Basketball isn’t my favorite sport by any means (not that I dislike it though), but the NBA is a pretty crappy league. It would take a lot to fix it.
Maybe… a lockout that costs the league an entire season…![]()
Because it doesn't really matter what is the world's second or third most popular spot, on a global scale, only soccer is relevant....what @Summer Rose said was on topic and a valid assessment of the topic...so you just wanted to chirp??...picked the wrong issue then, I'd say...![]()

There could actually be some argument for whether hockey or basketball is more popular. Obviously, if we are talking about just participation, then basketball is the answer. Spectator wise? That's a more difficult question.
It's called becoming a boomer and that's why you like hockey more now. You're past the marketable age and you're likely not to prefer the NBA again unless they start advertising Cash For Gold and term life insurance. For example I’m 23, a couple years ago me and my buddies loved the NBA almost as much as hockey, more sometimes, but this past year or two my buddies and I have completely lost interest in the NBA and the league seems to worsen by the day with how star players treat regular season games and all star games etc.
The NBA is further ahead of the NHL than it was 25 years ago. The gap will continue to grow.
NHL had it's chance in the 90's when they were neck and neck,
Anyone can go to the park with some friends and a ball and just play football/soccer/basketball/baseball. Hockey will never be able to reach that point.
The NBA might be a joke but their star athletes are international icons, in a similar way that soccer stars are. Larger than life personalities. They market those guys so well, in a way that the NHL hasn’t been able to do.

Doesn’t seem to have an impact on HollywoodNot until there are more black players in hockey. A big reason why half the population doesn't watch is because there's nobody who looks like them.
Also, as some would also say, that for team sports, harder to want to follow something you haven't played. People at worst can play pick up basketball at their local gym. Or did it in High School. Not until there are more black players in hockey. A big reason why half the population doesn't watch is because there's nobody who looks like them.

I just don’t buy that. Only a small fraction of the population has played organized American football, and yet it’s been by far and away the most dominant entertainment product on the continent for generations. Including in Mexico where it’s grown to become the second most popular entertainment sport despite barely even existing on the participating level.
For that matter, how many people in the stands at an NHL game have actually played organized hockey? The great majority of them have hockey experience along the lines of “plastic sticks in 8th grade gym class”, yet they show up paying hundreds to see a game.
