And yes, I do think the media is pushing the panic button just a bit because they do that on literally everything.

But in this case it might be good. If people need to be scared to not be stupid, then so be it.

Yeah especially in a world of anti-vaxxers and flat earth believers, maybe it's OK for the media to pull the panic button here to convince those. Those with level heads will know this is serious and know why the media is hyping this.

The truth will always win out.... don't fight misinformation with misinformation.

What happened today? It feels like we went from widespread worry to full-blown panic. Is it true that 60-70% of the population will be effected?

This is incredible.

Hope everyone is ready to go into a recession that will crush our economy.

So much panic over a virus that will only kill less than 1% of Americans who even get it. Most of them over 70.

Congrats media, you’ve done well getting those clicks.
I have 340 Friends and family on Facebook. Almost all of these people I know in person, play hockey with, am related to, or went to college with....the thought that 3 or 4 of them may die from this disease... Seems kinda like a big deal to me.

Yeah this is the other thing, we can't understate how much 1 out of 100 is.

Look, I know a lot of things are viewed through political prisms these days. It’s unfortunate, but it’s where we are as a society.

But, consider for a moment, that some of the people taking precautionary measures right now include fairly conservative personalities.

This issue isn’t about party affiliation or world views. It’s about something that, as MH pointed out, has a number of trickle down concerns.

I'll be honest, until today I was kind of thinking this was an overblown media creation. The media's response to anything and everything is why a lot of people don't take them seriously. But today has freaked me out.

I still wouldn't completely lose my mind over it. The fact that we're taking it seriously is great. China took it seriously and they're already stabilizing.

What we want to avoid is Italy where they did nothing and now they can't do anything because it's too late.

This virus is relatively very weak on surfaces, so avoiding crows where it can spread through the air easily is key.

That's why I anticipate that seasons will finish but in empty arenas.

It was as mentioned before, but the Jazz were in NYC a week ago. Visiting lockerrooms at MSG are the same for all right?

Caps were there the next night, less than 24 hours.

This is just one instance. Tons of teams share arenas.

End the season, delay it, whatever the decision is, don't play for a while.

Crows? I go through one of the busiest terminals to work and take 3 trains. I'm officially concerned.

I have a love/hate relationship with the news media that comes from a near 25 year career working with them.

However, they’re also somewhat caught in a catch-22 in these situations.

If they don’t push the issue, a lot of people sit back, no one feels pressure to make decisions, and then we criticize them for not sounding the alarm.

If they push the issue, people feel pressured to take preventative action, and then we criticize them because it wasn’t a catastrophe.

The challenge is that I think a lot of people are annoyed at being “inconvenienced” by all of this.

But imagine being the son of someone over 60 in a medical facility right now. Or the parent of a child with cancer and a compromised immune system. For those people, the concept of 1%, or the increased traffic in hospitals and it’s impact, is like having a gun pointed at their loved one.

Not gonna lie, the people who have to continue working and work during normal hours (i.e. traveling during rush hour) are most at-risk for exposure.

The good news: people of working age have nearly a 100% survival rate and it presents as little more than a bad flu.

We talked about 1 out of 100 being more than it seems like in the context of lives lost, but that being said, the numbers spike sharply at 70+ and absolutely skyrocket at 80+.

For whatever reason, this virus seems to be doing very little to young kids.

If you have elderly loved ones, stay the f*** away from them in no uncertain terms until this is over.

I live with both of my parents. My dad goes to work and has to deal with people all day every day.

My mom...in laws...aunt's..uncle's..my wife's grand mother..I've gotta know or be related to at least 30 people over 70. Just a fact of being almost 40.

Hell half my hockey team is over 50...

Can someone comment on Angela Merkle's comment about 60-70% of the world population being effected? Is it really that bad?
I obviously can't say what's going through her head but a couple of things:

-She definitely said just Germany in regards to 60-70%, not the world

-Even under worst case scenario, that doesn't seem right. Italy is literally not even at 1% yet and they handled it as bad as you possibly could have.

Again, I can't say what she's thinking but I would speculate that she's just trying to get people to be vigilant.

Is it true that it'll go away by the summer? And what's with that damn Israeli vaccine?
