construction guys will have them, you need an N95 to do drywall, the painters and stainers will also have P95s. I have a stack of them at my summer place I'm just not going to drive 4 hours to get them

so you have to know someone that has extra? or can you buy them?

All legit 3M/Honeywell/Home Depot/etc N95 masks are long gone from major retailers.

People are listing $15 boxes of 10 on ebay for $200, $300, $400 with 24 hour timeframes since ebay will delist them for price gouging within that time frame, if not sooner. They're just hoping someone will click the "Buy It Now" button and get their contact info before ebay kills the auction.

Other people are mass importing Chinese made masks that have the KN95 rating which is supposed to be an equivalent to N95, listing them for $4-$6 each in quantity on ebay/amazon. However, the problem is you have no idea if they are legitimate, or just sloppy bootlegs since there will be no documentation to prove they passed that testing.

I've been passing this link on to anyone who's asking:

Cambridge Mask Co - PREORDER

They're reusable N99 masks, better than N95 and last up to 3 months, though they won't be shipping until end of June. I figure better to have them for the future, or god forbid, this is still going on by then.

In Sweden, we had 7.5m (one for each citizen) of these masks (called M90) in storage like 5-10 years ago:

After that they burned most of them and gave the rest to ambulance and fire departments around the country. But listen to this, they are banned from using them since they don’t have a proper marking...

Edit: In 2016 they destroyed 7.1m of the masks...

Due to the air pollution from all the fires up here in California the past two summers, I had a box of construction N95 masks on hand when all this started. I'm actually thinking of donating the bulk of them and just keeping a handful for my partner and I. We can re-use them if we're safe about it.

If this were a shooting war the country would be losing its shit if we were sending our soldiers into battle without body armor or the best weaponry. Nurses and doctors are putting their actual lives on the line trying to save others and here we have these vague accusations that they are thieving masks for one thing. They don't have the equipment or enough protection for the battle they are in---that's a pretty well known fact. Trump needs to be a whole lot more careful with his words--he would be doing everyone a service getting these nurses and doctors everything they ask for. It's a better look than baseless accusations.

Sky is blue. Grass is green.

One day he will give a fairly good, coherent, informative press conference. The next day he will go completely off the rails and confuse everyone. It has been that way for 5 years. Whether you love or hate the guy, I don't think anyone should expect anything different at this point.

So some realism has set in. Not much of a hoax or just a simple seasonal flu anymore.

Almost nothing has gone perfectly so far so if her nostradamusing is right it will be more than 200,000 because even if our intentions get much better we might get good or even very good on our way to perfect. I do hold out the hope that a vaccine will come along before the numbers get that high.

It's my own view that there will never be real justice in this world without equality in all forms. So the one thing that could come out of all this when it's finally over is another chance for us to start over and make things fairer. We will be starting somewhere from scratch again. I think we'll all have to learn to share better because there will be a lot of need.

For the immediate future it will take time I think for a lot of things to get moving again.Listening to Cuomo we're tapped out on money for education so who knows if kids won't be out of school for a long time. Things are going to have to stitch together in NYC and NYS again and it will be a process I think--kind of like the Rangers right after the letter went out and the purge began--NYC and NYS slowly getting back to where it was. Speaking of Hockeysfuture--I don't see the NHL in September/October as realistic. Again things will depend on a vaccine. We cannot have crowds of people with uncertainty. There might not be any hockey in 20-21 and I think people should take things as they come.
The stimulus package that recently passed already includes billions set aside for public education. To tell you the truth, and I know this because of my job, it would probably be more than Cuomo gives us anyway.

The problem, from New York's perspective, is twofold. One, the total stimulus package money given to New York State is a total joke in comparison to the crisis we're facing. The money is not proportionate to how hard New York was hit. Two, Cuomo loves taking money for education and just using it on whatever he feels like, and I also know this from experience.

I understand that funding is going towards the virus. I get that part. What I fear is that our public education won't be the very next thing to be bailed out even though it should be.

My union is calling for a 24-hour strike today to send a message to Cuomo not to do anything stupid with our money (again, virus-related, I get) but I literally don't know if I can afford to do that. Teaching from home has turned out to be significantly more work than just going there.

Another crazy thing about work:

We have students who are essential workers. On the other end of the same token, we have students now unemployed. Some of them, well...have f***ing coronavirus.

Our President (not Trump, our president at work) also decided it would be a bright idea to kick students out of the dorms because they decided it was too dense. Very short notice. I get that, but some of these kids have nowhere else to go. A lot of them don't live in New York. It's mid-semester and mommy and daddy live in Nebraska. The dorm is a tiny community where distancing could easily be enforced. Throwing them out created more problems than it solved.

I got together yesterday with colleagues (via technology) and we all came to the conclusion that we're in a situation where we have to say "You know what? f*** due dates." They do the work when they can.

In my own class for my second degree, they already told us we're all getting an A because what-the-f***-ever at this point. I'm leaning towards doing that, honestly.

Next semester will be better (hoping I'm still employed!) because we'll be fully equipped to prep online courses if we have to. Planning an entire in-person course for four months and then having this virus say "hey, f*** you, you're online now and you have six days and half your students are compromised" has been like a bomb going off.

And don't get me wrong, I know I could be working in healthcare and it could be so much worse, I just needed to get that off my chest.

As a newly initiated home teacher, teaching from home is harder than my own job. The only way I can get my girls to sit still is to threaten to call their real teacher.

Good luck with that. That's the exact reason I got out of childhood education and moved to higher education.

If you act up in my class, I throw your ass out. You're 20.
