And maybe, here's a crazy idea, let's have national standards like EVERY OTHER f***ING COUNTRY instead of letting ignoramus governors kill people.

Domestic travel should have been down in February. If you're not home, go home now. If you're home, stay there.

There is absolutely no reason for people to be on planes. Airports are STILL open. Why????

Yeah, and it’s all a matter of time. Shut down completely for 1-2 months? It would create the biggest damage 2 to none that we ever have seen, but is it worth it to save lives? Of course.

But what if you have to shut down for 6 months? To some extent it’s a figure problem, the state can just “print” money (printing money is the same as loaning it), and if everyone does it, you could have a corona write off that the world probably would buy. They are scared to death of just taking a zero from all countries debts, because they fear people would loose respect for the fiscal system and start spending too much thinking that there always is a bailout around the corner. But this is a one time thing.

But besides what really is a numbers game (funding the economy of all economies, which can be done by just printing money and then reducing debt so that we don’t pass it on to the next generation) — 6 months would start to produce some really really ugly shortages and similar effects. It’s also practically impossible to just sponsor the business that needs it and not end up with significant sums going into the pocket of people that don’t need it. Like let’s say that the state picks up the bill — how? How do you accomplish that? Would 500k people be enough to fill out forms, review them and make the payments?

And things are shutting down. Metals, food, chemicals, personnel, education, it’s just an extremely impactful situation that — nobody — even remotely has a clue how it should be handled, what can happen and so forth,

Like history shows us with outmost clarity that humans can go wrong and bad things can happen. You don’t want to venture into completely unknown territory with a world in chaos, unless ... what exactly? A lot of things to think about... ;)

I thought this was a really well written piece that talks through a lot of the issues you astutely hit on:

Coronavirus: The Zebra Swan | The American Spectator | Politics Is Too Important To Be Taken Seriously.

Unfortunately I am struggling to see a scenario where we can just stay 100% shut down and expect...civilization as we know it to keep functioning. We can print money so people can make rent but that isn't enough.

I begin to wonder if this is the next stage of this crisis. The first stage was exponentially increasing contagion with the threat of grave illness and death. The second stage was massive economic shock as we shut down enormous “nonessential” segments of our economy. But there’s always been the assumption in that second stage: money isn’t worth lives. This is true, of course, but it’s an incomplete thought. Too many people seem to look at the economy as an endless paper-shuffling exercise that can be indefinitely suspended if we give people enough money to make rent.

But that’s not true. I’m not worried about running out of bread; I’m sure some bureaucrat or economic consultant had enough common sense to make sure that the wheat supply chain was labeled “essential business,” and the flow of flour will continue uninterrupted. But what happens if we run out of plastic bags to put the bread in? What happens if we run out of twist-ties to close the bags? Things that are very small and so cheap that they seem worthless become very important when you run out of them. We have a central authority that decided our invisible hand only needs one thumb and a forefinger up to the second knuckle, and I’m not confident they’ve covered all contingencies.

The last two weeks, a lot of people treated it like a little vacation , going out, ignoring the mandates, while others have been either directly or indirectly effected by this virus.

The worst weeks are coming upon us now, and now people stuck at home longer, with nowhere to go since everything is closed, are gonna get nasty, and stir crazy fast. It’s gonna get ugly. Just try to keep some fun in your life and take up a hobby or something, and if you have been effected by this virus, good luck, and hope everything turns out ok for you.

10,683 confirmed cases in Westchester, only 226 required hospitalization. only 2%. Very low number. 0.89% have passed. Also low.

Encouraging but also a bit of an incomplete picture. Given that it takes 1-2 weeks to go to the hospital and 2-3 weeks to pass, the denominator should really be the case count from a few weeks ago depending on the metric. One of many aspects that makes measuring this difficult.

I just read this online. I have no idea if it really works but I will try it.

What Kills COVID-19 Wuhan Coronavirus? - True Strange News

Activated Masks with Salt

One interesting cheap DYI idea is to use salt water to create an activated mask. You basically fill a small bowl with water and keep adding salt and stirring until no more will dissolve, then soak your mask in the salt solution for 5 minutes, then let it dry. ☠️
Before you dismiss this, see the article in Nature for why this may work.
Universal and reusable virus deactivation system for respiratory protection
While there are already some electrostatic on the fibers of the masks, the forces exerted by the dried salt appear to increase damage to the virus, breaking it up and deactivating it at a molecular level.

img_6035.jpg
The linked study describes the salt coating used in the experiments, it contains at least one type of bioreagent. You can't simply dunk a mask in salt water and get the same effect.

Additionally, this describes a process by which the filtered virus is damaged. In other words, even if you were to have the proper coating it doesn't filter more particles/make the filtration more effective, it reduces the possibility of surface transmission (which one can avoid by using proper mask procedures anyway).

Edit: My apologies, the study does in fact describe both an increase in filtration efficiency and reduction in surface transmission.

Here's something I want everyone to keep in mind.

My uncle is living with us currently. He's an essential worker so I try to avoid sustained contact with him as much as I can. At least he's being careful...to an extent. But here's my gripe: this dude is going to work with a mask and gloves, avoiding people like the plague (that idiom is losing it's muscle these days but stay with me), yelling at co-workers who aren't being careful enough, changing his clothes as soon as he walks in, and staying six feet away from everyone else in the house being that he's working. Again, great. He then proceeds to walk into the kitchen, grab his food, and start eating without washing his hands.

This is a pattern I've noticed. I've seen people touch their faces with the gloves they're wearing. I've seen people take the gloves off and then proceed without washing. I've seen people hold masks to their faces with dirty hands. People are so caught up in the panic and the procedures and all the new fancy things you have to do that they're forgetting the #1 most effective defense by leaps and bounds.

Sure, you should do those other things, but think of it as a hockey team. You need a full lineup to win but washing your hands is Wayne f***ing Gretzky and you're taking him out of the lineup.

Completely agree. Based on everything I've read it's 1. dont be around people 2. dont touch your face, 3. wash your hands. There are other risks and other ways to mitigate risks but those seem to be the big 3.

Exactly, many people are so concerned about staying 6 feet apart and wearing masks but they are really forgetting the most important thing. Being a hand washing nazi and not touching your face are the most important things one can do to not get the virus. That's why I posted the video of that ICU doctor talking about the utmost importance of doing so. People should be washing their hands multiple times a day every day but especially during this crisis and especially when coming home after being out.

f***ing enforce it. f*** your "freedom." You're not free to get other people sick.

how? Drones? Fines? The small percentage are everywhere. Heck, it’s not even warm yet after a very mild winter so these people haven’t been inside for months. Wait until the weather hits 70+.

Our president concealed the extent of the virus.

what if he said it was worse? Then what? The other side claims he caused a nationwide panic. If we had more tests would that result in people not socializing? The breakout was in Ny and plastered all over the news yet Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, etc went about their lives like nothing was happening.

We still have people socializing and it’s not even warm outside across the US. Do they know the extent yet b/c they don’t seem like it. Roll the clock back and they would? Com’on

Smh - as if the behavior of people would have changed.
Look at the numbers. We're closing in on twice the number of cases as any other country. We will be there soon.

We're not the most populated country hit by this. We're not the first. We're not the densest. We're not the poorest. We're not the one with the worst healthcare. And yet, look at the numbers.

That's on the leadership of this country.

So when people go tomorrow and continue socializing it’s the leader’s fault smh.

f***ing absolutely.

He has never been serious about this. He was saying it wasn't a problem well into March. He has told the country on national televsion that we'll be back to normalcy soon. He has contradicted experts. He has never outlined the importance of social distancing.

This March 30th. Monday.

"Stay calm."

"The coronavirus will go away."

"We're doing a great job."

"You know it is going away."

"I'm very proud."

"It's almost a miracle."

Here's the great job we're doing. Here's the miracle:

And you wonder why Americans continue to act like nothing is happening.

I don't know, really (none of us do) but I hope these rates mean that what we're doing in New York is slowly working.

As I alluded to yesterday, I think the grim projections are rooted in the fact that parts of the country aren't doing enough.

Cuomo mentioned today that NYS currently accounts for 1 in 2 deaths nationwide, but he projects 1 in 6 in the coming weeks.

Didn't Florida just issue orders today?? WAY too late.
I'm from Florida and I strongly agree. DiSantis is one dumb MF'er. A real idiot. AND, he's allowing churches to have services. With people. Like usual. Freaking moron.

Florida is gonna get creamed. And we won't hit our top until early May.

You really believe that? Take a look outside... everyone knows - a lot of people are still going out. I’m not going to contend that Trump did everything right, but it’s a tough balancing act to to inform people without causing mass hysteria. You bash this country while China caused this thing and lied about the impact and numbers over and over again. Trump wanted a travel ban to China and Schumer said it was xenophobic and racist. We don’t have Kings or Emperors in this country.

Humans should return to their origins, realizing that with or without money, the important thing is to survive. Apparently our species is too stupid despite the overwhelming evidence so chalk it up to one persons fault. Smh

We can't keep blaming China. We're about to have triple the cases China ever did. This is our problem now.

So the species is just less stupid in all the other countries on the chart?

This is the epicenter. In a hundred years, historians will call this the American Virus. This is our problem. Something went wrong here that didn't go wrong in other places.
