The reporter was trying to pin him down as to the availability of ventilators, because he's been vacillating on the subject (putting it nicely) for days now.

The American people don't want a Trumpian "it's great, we're doing great"; we want to know X ventilators on Y date, period, full stop. If he refuses to give a straight answer to that effect, he should be asked again, exactly as this reporter did.
I agree, but that's also not what the reporter asked. He would have probably gotten a bullshit response anyways, but at least try to ask a question that can get an actual answer. The media is thriving on this situation (the virus AND a guy who can't form proper sentences being in office), and it's clear that they've been working to generate traffic, not to inform people. Regardless, I don't understand why the president is spending so much time talking to press instead of actually dealing with this.

Edit: probably not gonna respond further, because my thoughts on media are pretty irrelevant to what this thread is supposed to be

The issue with this president is that he is not a skilled orator. Not by even conventional means, so by mentioning Churchill, he's not even in the ballpark. For a week there earlier in the month, I felt he did step up and presented a more straightforward version of him at the briefings, after the initial denials and bravado whatever you want to call it. I found it a bit refreshing, actually. But as this crisis has gone sideways since then, and continues to go sideways, he's falling apart and has retreated back to grandstanding.

I honestly think any other leader would've tried to keep a lid on it in the early weeks, keep it from exploding in spite of what was happening elsewhere. The problem with Trump is that he can't present anything effectively. He talks like a salesman.

Trump is a TV character. The problem is his script doesn’t work half the time. It’s like it’s mad libs, just insert “no quid pro quo” or “no one seen this coming” or “it was a perfect call” in the blank spaces. No self reflection with this man. Only outward projection of success even when he fails miserably.

instead of bluster we need real foresight and leadership right now. I pay attention to Fauci right now and not the guy who demands flattery to do his damn job.

Just watched Cuomo's press conference--yesterday the death count in NYS was 519--today it's 728. So 209 in one day. The numbers are getting higher.

I must say I have been talking to old friends more lately than ever. It is nice reconnecting and catching up. So much of my life has been about work and my career.

Been listing to Pink Floyd a lot recently and man do the lyrics of Time hit home.

Reading a lot more, my diet is dialed in, and my credit card bill is 35% lower. I've also worked from home long enough now to get a sense whether I would prefer it more permanently.

The ironic thing is that after all of this mishandling Trump will probably be rewarded with another term by default because Biden has been sleeping on the job (and when he's not sleeping, looking like he needs a nap). Knowing Trump - it'll probably be affirmation to him that he handled the crisis like a champ. If you thought his ego was grandiose now just we wait...

You just know he will try to cancel the election somehow.

I FT WFH in my last job. It's not all it's cracked up to be.

Working from home was strange at first but now that I'm acclimated it's going to suck going back. I didn't realize how much of a distraction everything going on around the office was until it was gone. At first the equanimity was discomforting but now it's amazing.

Also don't have to risk my life twice a day driving on highways overflowing with people staring down at the light in their lap. The gas savings and overall savings on car maintenance won't hurt either...

I had to take a small haircut in salary myself but no commuting costs. Lunch in Manhattan is expensive too. I will likely net not much less working from home. If anything I am well rested and eating more healthy. I am glad I am not young anymore I know I would have taken stupid chances in my 20s. Now I stay inside for my family.

In the fall, I transitioned into a full time remote position. The only time I see people in person (related to work) is when I go to a conference or chair a meeting with stakeholders. So in my day to day, little has changed for me since the outbreak started.

I will say, I love it and my personal happiness has gone up a lot since I've made the move. Mainly because I've spent the last +10 years driving around the capital beltway (45 min-2.5hr commute depending on the hellish traffic and time I left home/work) or commuting into work via the DC Metro (subway) system (1.5 hr commute). Now, I wake up at 7:30am, meander downstairs for coffee and breakfast, and then I'm in my office and working at 8am. No getting ready, no business dress, no added stress even before I get to work (unless I burnt the toast!) and none when I sign off at the end of day. I'll take the minor negatives for that trade off any time.

As for Trump's response to reporters. It really is frustrating because it's a softball question.

Q: So everybody who needs a ventilator will get one?

A: That is the plan. We are doing everything we can to ramp up ventilator production to meet possible future demand. We are working in conjunction with our health experts, businesses, and state governments to make it so every one of our seriously ill citizens has the best chance to beat this. We'll have to be nimble here because there are no certainties. We'll pivot if we have to and work together to protect our citizens.

if the reporter presses: Can you guarantee it?

A: I can guarantee that we will work together and use the full mighty force of the US government to protect our citizens.

It's not like I thought about the above responses for a while. That is speaking right off the cuff. Being able to speak publicly and being able to handle questions, sometimes tough ones, is a major component of being the leader of the USA. All Presidents from both parties have faltered at one time or another. Best way to minimize it is to really prepare.
