This is going to prove that we can do a lot of things we're told are not possible.
I hope we take that lesson to heart.
I discovered that I can live without Facebook.

I told you guys, he's actually a jolly guy in real life. It just doesn't translate to over the keyboard.
Ok, let's not get crazy, now.I discovered that I can live without Facebook.
Sure if you consider tanking the economy doing something. This is going to prove that we can do a lot of things we're told are not possible.

The best info is that 99% of symptomatic cases present with a fever. If a person doesn't have a fever but is feeling other symptoms the best info we have is that it is extremely unlikely that the person has this particular virus. So the first thing to do is monitor your temperature. Tests are run based on doctor's orders, but this can give you some immediate peace of mind even if you aren't tested, and this would be one of the (current) requirements to meet to get tested.Question regarding testing. I haven't tested even though once in a while I felt a little under the weather (pretty sure it was nothing). I never got tested because a) I didn't want to ACTUALLY get sick and b) I didn't want to take a test from someone with severe symptoms who is at risk.
But now that there are more should my family and I get tested and if so how to do it safely to not get exposed to it if we don't have it?

Unless you are rich and/or famous, that is.
I feel that it is absolutely important to warn people about the scenarios happening in Italy, for instance. Any "this is just like the flu, and only 7500 people have died" message needs to be corrected quickly. That kind of thinking can literally kill people, as we've seen in Italy. The only way to avoid that kind of scenario is for people to be (rightfully) scared of the implications of leaving home, and adjust their behavior. Some people are just miserable and like making other people miserable.
Look, this definitely sucks. Of course it does.
But for f***s sake, we CAN beat this. We just need to make some adjustments and stick with them for awhile. Staying positive and busy is the best thing for your mental health, your immune system, and the economic implications of this crisis.
We don't need to decimate the economy to take care of each other and stop lighting dinosaurs on fire.Sure if you consider tanking the economy doing something.
This is not a revelation, society already had that understanding. Decimating the economy has been a price we are not willing to pay to cut emissions, we need a better way
Yeah, dismissive messages are just as dangerous, but I don't see anybody of any importance doing that. Even Trump is taking this super seriously and he wasn't at first.I feel that it is absolutely important to warn people about the scenarios happening in Italy, for instance. It's not about making people miserable, it's about correcting people's understanding about how severe this is so that we are all safer.
Maybe one day we won't need to, but today we do. Society can't function without fossil fuels and more importantly can't grow without them. Renewables aren't anywhere neat at the scale or cost we need to replace FFs. One day hopefully but that's a long way offWe don't need to decimate the economy to take care of each other and stop lighting dinosaurs on fire.
It wouldn't be a long way off if we actually worked at it. We sit and do nothing and say that nothing can be done.Maybe one day we won't need to, but today we do. Even a few pages back in this thread there were people posting dismissive messages - that was a paraphrase of something someone here was writing. It's not really the people of importance that need to be convinced at this point. It's people like us who have the choice of staying home and keeping themselves and others safe, or living their lives in ways that put everyone at risk. You and I clearly need no convincing, but others here and elsewhere do.Yeah, dismissive messages are just as dangerous, but I don't see anybody of any importance doing that. And look, I'm all for scaring the absolute shit out of those people if that's what works, but you have to be responsible with how you relay those messages and look out for the mental health of those who are already on board.
We are going to follow the same rules for this thread that exist in the COVID-19 forum.
Here is a tracker from Johns Hopkins.
Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center
That decision opened the floodgates. In the last three weeks, the volume of coronavirus testing has grown exponentially. Data from the COVID Tracking Project shows that the total number of coronavirus tests performed in the US grew from fewer than 1,000 on March 4 to almost 10,000 by March 12 and more than 100,000 by March 19.
These numbers are still far from sufficient to get the coronavirus under control. South Korea, with about 15 percent of the US population, has tested 270,000 people. But America's testing capacity has been growing fast, and we can expect continued growth in the coming days and weeks.
On Wednesday, Abbott Labs announced FDA approval of its coronavirus test. The company said it was "deploying 150,000 laboratory tests immediately" and was aiming to reach a million tests a week before the end of March.
Another major medical testing provider, Roche, announced on Monday that it was planning to ship out 400,000 testing kits. "The test kits are being sent to a network of more than 30 hospital and reference laboratories in the US that already have the required instrumentation in place and have the ability to implement high-volume testing immediately."
These are just two of many examples of US providers working to ramp up coronavirus testing capacity. With their help, the US will soon have far more coronavirus testing capacity than it has today.
yep, we desperately need to get to the magic point where we're testing asymptomatic carriers - that's when we really stop the spread and can reboot societyThe way to think about this epidemic is in terms of testing, in my opinion. When there isn't enough testing, the virus spreads unchecked - nobody knows who has it, and who should stop contacting other people. When testing is excessive, uncertainty evaporates, and it's clear who has the virus - and which of their friends should also be in quarantine. Pay careful attention to the rate of testing - not the number of cases.
Just take a breath man. Your dad is going to make his own decisions and while I agree working 40 hours / 5 days is irresponsible right now, you can't assume with certainty he'll contract it. Focus on what's in your control by avoiding unnecessary travel so you don't bring anything back into your home and the rest is out of your handsSo my uncle apparently told me dad that I was concerned but also said "without you we won't exist". Meanwhile, he's paid him shit the entire time he's worked for him while he drives Audis and Mercedeses. I'm absolutely destroyed right now, I can barely function. My uncle is sending his own brother to his death.
