Thought the little guy deserved some big recognition. He just keeps getting better and better.

As of today, he has 8 goals and 22 points in 24 games. At nearly a PPG pace, this would represent a high-end result for any "little man" offensive dynamo in the league. Great results, a top line offensive player - but not unheard of among guys 5'-10" and 165 pounds...even if rare.

What is more deserving of recognition - or at least in combination with the offensive output - is...I'm not sure people realize what an amazing defensive player Garland is or has become. Last year he was one of the best defensive forwards by analytics in the league and he's continued that this season. He plays nearly 20 minutes a game, he can play the PK and all special teams, he's an absolute warrior - blocks shots, can carry the puck out of danger and is incredible at winning pucks as a little guy.

He's one of the best two-way wingers in the NHL...what he has essentially become is like a Nichushkin in a smaller package. Only EP averages more ice per game among Canucks forwards and only by a measly 1 second. Garland has HUGE endurance and has regularly been putting in 23-24 minutes from a forward spot for a hobbled team. The Canucks are missing their star goalie, their top center is MIA, EP started the year stuck in the mud and their 3rd and 4th defensemen by ice time are Tyler Myers and Carson Soucy.

And yet...the Canucks remain very relevant. Yes, EP has heated up. Yes, DeBrusk is on a scoring streak. And of course, Quinn is the engine of the team.

But Conor freaking Garland man...he's the unsung hero of that franchise. He's a really unique little guy winger that plays a big boy game.

He was so good last year, but the points weren’t entirely there. This year the points look more in line with his value. He’s all heart and a joy to watch.

He’s a weird player though in that he’s better as the main driver of a line, and doesn’t seem quite as good with the two big name centers. You don’t usually see that from non-star wingers.

Much appreciation for Garland. He was likely overlooked at every level of hockey, meaning he had to always be at his best. The fact he even made it to the NHL is an incredible feat. That he's as good as he is, is even more remarkable.

I used to think of him as "Good for a little guy," but that was wrong on my part. He's good, period.

Vancouver board thattya way
I, for one, love the threads with insights from the fans of a certain team that bring information to light you would otherwise miss. Certainly much more interesting than discussing Michkov or Edmonton's goaltending or whatever flavor of the month is there at the time ad nauseam.

I’m not even a Canucks fan. Sometimes it’s interesting to do a check-in on guys who are probably a lot better or excelling in a capacity that is more than the general consensus is aware of.

Plus Garland is just a fun one to root for.

If Garland is 5’10” I must be 7’3”
He’s misquoted on height and I have no idea how or why, but he’s 5’8” and said so in at least one interview.

I remember going to see Wildcats vs Mooseheads a while ago now. I went to the game to see the upcoming top 10 pick Ehlers and some of the other hyped moosehead players at the time.

I remember leaving being most impressed by Garland, a guy I never even heard of. He outworked everyone else on the ice and took pucks to the net despite being small and had a great shot (although not as good as Ehlers at the time).

Then I saw a he was a mid round pick of the Coyotes and was like wow I thought he was better than that. So absolutely no surprise to me he has vastly outperformed his draft place and become a legit top 6 NHL forward.

Garland has been fantastic last season and so far this one. He has been the play driver on Avery line he has been on. He has been one of our best players this year.

Still part of one of the worst trades in history, but is providing huge value for the Canucks at his contract.

The thing about Garland I don't understand is how craped on he is/has been.

Canucks fans have been calling him overpaid and trying to get rid of him for 3 years. People seeing his name come up in trade proposals scream that they want nothing to do with him because of whatever reason they can conceive

The thing about him is, when he was drafted, he was a mid to late draft pick. In his draft year he had 129 points in the QMJHL and was 34 points ahead of the next person on his team. These point totals were actually ahead of almost everyone else drafted that year (including McDavid even though Garland played 20 more games)

His point totals in the NHL are insane when you factor in that in 429 games, he has managed to accrue 264 points for .61 points per game, and of that 210 of those points were scored at even strength meaning that he is scoring at a.48 points per game ratio at EVEN STRENGTH.

This puts him for his rate of production at ES as one of the top performers dollar for dollar in the league over the last 4-5 years. He does so with almost zero power play time, but also while killing penalties and averaging only 15:24 minutes per game

He isn't big, he isn't a stand out of any sort. There was or were arguments about his contract but every single team scours the minors and pro leagues looking for guys like him who can do what he does with the time he is given. As a barely middle 6 player the guy is incredibly valuable and as a hockey fan before team fan he's an absolute beauty of a player

I’m happy he’s finally getting the recognition, I don’t know why some fans included him in trade offers their has always been that persistence in his game something that we lacked a true heart and soul player. At that point I felt like he was someone we lacked since Alex Burrows who was also a player who had to really fight his way into the league.

He's a really good player. Extremely hard to knock him off the puck even at his smaller stature and really good hands and footwork in tight spaces. 3rd in scoring on the Canucks currently

Garland should have made the 2016 US Jr. Team along with fellow Scituate, Ma
native Ryan Donato.
