Two players from the same draft year. Caufield has a bit of an edge with NHL production but McMichael may have a bit of an edge pre-NHL and has a lesser role on the Caps.

Connor McMichael:
  • 102 points in his final 52 game CHL season
  • 27 points in 33 ahl games as a 20 year old
  • 15 points in 14 U20 WJ Games
  • 7 goals and 15 points in 50 games
Cole Caufield:
  • 36 points in 36 games in his first NCAA season
  • 52 points in final 31 game NCAA season
  • 7 points in 12 U20 WJ Games
  • 11 goals and 23 points in 48 games

Who do you like more? Feels to me like this should be close?

Ever since Ducharme was fired Caufield has looked elite. I understand a small sample size but it isn't just the points he's putting up. He looks dangerous all the time again.

For the first 30 games he didn't.

Both good prospects. McMichael has shown flashes when they actually gave him opportunities with top 6 guys which has not happened at all since Backstrom returned. Tough to succeed when you're an offensive-first guy getting 8-10 minutes a night with no PP time. It's not his fault his team is actually good.

Caufield has been given every opportunity to succeed and starts to look like he's back to last season's playoff form. He looks like he's going to be a consistent goal scorer and bonafide top 6 winger.

Too early to say especially given both players have been given different opportunities. I think McMichael's upside is still a bit higher and he plays the more important position while also not being 5'7.

Yeah hard to say with McMichael as he really dont play a lot. For example his scoring 5v5 per 60 is 1,78 and ahead of Caufield who has 1,58.

Also Caufield have the third most time on Montreal's PP where he have only managed 4 points in 99 minutes for example Toffoli has 8 in 98 minutes and Hoffman 9 in 107 minutes. McMichael in comparison have only 5 minutes on the PP. McMichael is on the better team, but plays down the lines and dont get a lot of time. Caufield plays on a worse team, but get to play with the best player on the team so if his stats wasnt better it would suggest he was worse.

Most Caps fan think McM gets played way to little as his advanced stats suggests he should, but there are so many veterans that its hard to get a lot of time for him. In a similar role as Caufield I believe McM would follow what Caufield have produced and with size and center potential I wouldnt trade him for Caufield.

Season wide stats on caufield are kind of useless this year.

Not just points since Ducharme was fired Caufield not only is getting more points but is playing better and has legitimate line mates again.

Ducharme had him playing with literal NHL/AHL tweeners.

honestly Caufield is legit, it's been a long time since we had an offensive dynamo and I truly believe that Caufield will be a PPG+ winger. I would absolutely not trade Caufield for McMichael

Interesting comparison. Pretty different players. I tend to kind of lean toward preferring the more diversified offensive skillset and the more important position, but it's hard to argue with just having the pure instinctive finishing ability of someone like Caufield. Also hard to get a good read on, as others have mentioned, due to their very different circumstances and deployment situations. Kind of lean McMichael as the one i'd take, but it's hard to argue with the way Caufield has looked when he's on one of his little hot streaks thus far in the NHL. But that's sort of the nature of players like Caufield. They tend to be very feast or famine, and don't add a lot when the puck isn't going in for them. Always makes those sort of pure goal-scorers tougher to value.
