I think the league wants to avoid another McDavid situation where the winner doesn't accept the award, but Marner (and the Canes) are sure making it difficult for the league to avoid said situation, even if the Canes do come back and win.
I don't see how at the current pace the league could give the award to Hall or Andersen with a straight face. Somebody would have to step up huge for the Canes in all 3 wins that they need. Or if it goes to a game 7 overtime and the Canes win, they could throw it at whoever scored the winner and maybe get away with not giving it to Marner, but that's about it.
Marner is iron hot right now, but 28 points is still not 42 points, which is what McDavid had. There is a maximum of 4 games left. There are players in NHL history who had 30+ playoff points in a losing cause and didn't win it. Daniel Briere, Logan Couture, Bure comes to mind as well. We will have to see. There might be a case where it just makes the most sense to give it to him in a losing cause. It made sense for Reggie Leach to win it in 1976 with a still-record 19 goals. No Hab stood out on that team where they had to get it either. Dryden, maybe Lafleur is who you give it to. But a goal in 10 straight playoff games is epic. Plus a 5 goal game in an elimination game. You've got to give it to Leach on that one.
It really depends on how the last few games go. We all agree Marner is the winner if the Knights win it though. That much is certain.
