The Oilers were rumored to have interest in Kahkonen previously, and he can't be any worse than Skinner to start this year. At 1 year/1 mill it seems like a no-brainer with zero risk.

I also assume this means Colorado is going to make a trade for Blackwood sooner than later.

You're reading too much into it.

Kahkonen is just the most mediocre of the Avs 3 goalies. He would also probably be the most mediocre of an Oilers trio...or at least no less mediocre than the other options.

For as much flak as Georgiev rightfully gets, his upside is still way higher than Kahkonen - and, for better or worse, the Avs are considerably more invested in him and getting him mentally back in shape more so than Kahkonen who looked like every bit the turn-style the other guys have been in his one start this year.

I'm not surprised at all. It would be a fool's errand to overanalyze Kahkonen's start against Tampa Bay, but we have enough data from his career to know he likely wasn't going to run with Colorado's starting job.

Realistically, Kahkonen was battling Annunen for a roster spot. But since the waiver claim, the latter has started six of Colorado's last ten games (5-1-0). No sense in rostering three goalies if Kahkonen was third in the pecking order. Same goes for the Avalanche's eight defenseman set up. It's not sustainable, and I expect Kylington to be dealt or waived in the near future. He's only suited up for 4/15 games, twice as a forward out of desperation.

Honestly I liked him in a small sample in NJ. He got swept up in the Vanacek move to get us out of a contract. The team was a mess but he was not terrible. I think had they not made the Allen trade he'd be backing up Marky. Guys gonna need a new suitcase soon, poor bastard

could also be an indication that Sakic is going to make a move for Gibson, Blackwood etc.

It’s really not an indicator at all. We have three goalies. Kahkonen is the third goalie. He never plays. We have skaters coming off time off, including Nuke in 2 days.

The only thing this is a sign of is the Avs would rather have a full complement of skaters on the roster, like most teams, rather than carry a third goalie who never plays and was always just a freebie band aid and never an actual solution.

The Avs should make a goalie trade eventually, but it has nothing to do with this move meaning something is “brewing”.

Are they trying to screw around and do the Vegas thing? Or possibly expecting Vegas to repay the favour they potentially did in helping them steal Lavoie? Or...what exactly was the point of any of this?
