Disagree, if your system causes know he is not going to sign you gotta move him. Would be different if the Canes had the stuff to make a deep run this year but they don’t. Necas and Drury are not worth another first round exit
East is wide open and the deadline isn’t until next Friday let’s wait and see I don’t think they will just stand pat

I keep seeing people talk about The System, and how Mikko is bad for The System, and how maybe Rod should change The System.

I have two questions:

1. Do you know what The System is? Can you explain it in a paragraph?

2. What evidence do you have that Mikko is a poor fit for The System?

Additional question: If you get rid of Rod and the System, who's replacing him?

I would describe the system as dump and chase with the goal of establishing possession, cycling alongside the boards, engaging a defenseman with the goal of one of the four in the zone to break free in the slot to get a shot off.

This system has increasingly failed and works much less in the playoffs when teams jam the middle and double down on shot blocking, which leads to the cycle game ending with a drop off to a defenseman floating in a wrister from the blue line. Not a horrible strategy, but the team have been really bad about establishing any sort of net front presence that’s necessary to make that work.

The only games I didn't like him were the last two. Even then I might have just been tainted by the fact those games weren't great in general (he didn't stand out as horrific compared to anyone else anyways). First several games he was close to scoring many goals and he did make some intelligent passes that he and the other guys weren't on the same page on. I think his board work had been pretty good as well, which does fit our system. I've mentioned before, but not everyone hits the ground running. We really need a game or two where he and we get some bounces and puck luck and all this could look silly in hindsight.

I mean I really want him to extend here because I do think he is the kind of player we need to take that next step. I just wish he would get more time with Aho and Jarvis or Svech. Put him with our best players and just let them develop chemistry. It might not work right away, but when it all clicks, it'll be well worth the effort.

I mean a couple years back everyone thought Florida was washed (myself included) when they didn't come out of the door guns blazing after the Huby for Tkachuk trade. Took a while for everyone to figure it out, but once they did, they've been an absolute machine.

I'm even one that's willing to give guys a little bit of a pass on the first year with a new team out of free agency because everything they've known, even if they've moved before, is different. It's that much harder to figure out midseason. This guy just got dealt a shit hand with the timing of the trade maybe catching him slightly off guard (i.e. I don't think he was blindsided but thought they might be bluffing or wait til the deadline), had a sick team, a new place, four nations, and injury, totally snakebitten, and the team just naturally hitting one of those bad patches around him. I really just want something to go right for the dude and go from there. I've watched him his whole career as someone that's an Avs fan second and I'd love to see things go right and have him stick around.

It's interesting to hear all of your takes on the Rantanen situation. To me I trust management to do what they can to sign him and if he doesn't sign, that sucks, but on to the next.

This year I've finally gotten to the point where Pittsburgh fans were at for so long. We're going to make the playoffs, we're not winning the Metro. Now is the time to try some weird groupings because what we've been doing hasn't worked in the playoffs. Yes it would be nice to see consistency, but we need to know who works with who. Now from these past couple weeks, you could easily say no one works with anyone but the point still stands. So it's just kind of work through the troubles now and figure it out and wake me up when the playoffs get here.

People saying the system doesn't work in the playoffs just have no clue of why we've struggled in the playoffs. I've posted it here before and don't feel like digging it up right now but seriously go look at our playoff stats 5v5 vs. special teams. We are up there with recent Cup winners as one of the best 5v5 playoff teams. That is our system succeeding in the playoffs. But we are one of the worst, if not the absolutely worst, at special teams in the playoffs and it has absolutely sunk us.

Our "system" really doesn't have any bearing on our PP and PK. This is by far my biggest criticism of Rod which is not changing something up on the PP and to a lesser extent the PK in the playoffs. Hire an outside face to run the PP, change the PP system, whatever. But it has been incredibly bad for years now. And the PK despite being the best in the league in the regular season since Rod took over has been well below average in the playoffs. That is an issue that needs to be fixed and Rod needs to make adjustments.

But our main "system" of defense first, dump and chase, aggressive forecheck, cycling in the O zone rather than creating offense off the rush, etc. has not been an issue at all. It has worked extremely well, both in the regular season and the playoffs.

Rod's loyalty to Daniels is probably the biggest knock on this team right now. Any other organization that drops out of the playoffs because of their PP year after year would fire their PP coach.
Rod probably has a soft spot for assistant coaches charged with running an underperforming power play, having been in that position himself.

He’s a very loyal guy, to a fault at times. You think he doesn’t see Burns struggling out there like the rest of us? But he’s not going to cut Burns’ ice time because of Father Time. That’s what Maurice did to him when he was a player, and I’m sure he’s still got a chip on his shoulder because of it.

This. Its the Maurice thing

Well Burns should be aware his game isn’t where it needs to be and should maybe go to Rod and say I’m gonna end this Ironman streak and rest some games down the stretch. Idk what’s more important to Burns is it a Ironman streak or a Stanley cup? I think you’d be viewed a lot differently if you stepped up and ended the streak yourself and then won a cup.

Rants fits the system better than Necas did to be honest, once in the zone anyways. He’s strong on the boards and on the cycle. He can create down low off his strength.

I think the biggest issue is that Aho hasn’t really been dangerous this season despite some production. He has to draw attention and coverage. The other team tends to lean towards Rants to make sure he doesn’t get an easy feed. Aho and whoever else have to be more dangerous themselves so the defense has to be honest and cover them.

The biggest thing we're missing from the loss of Necas is our zone entries, especially on the PP. His speed was a big factor in setting up the zone and without that, we're really struggling
