What is going on. This is so against both Carolina and Colorado's MO for the past decade.

Colorado knows they are going to lose Rantanen, because he isn't a mark. He isn't going to sign for less just because MacKinnon did.

My guess is that they either get a cash controlled player with term (Jarvis?), or they will get assets that they will flip for Pettersson or Miller. Basically, replacing Rantanen with a cost controlled player who fits into their salary structure, because Rantanen doesn't and they will lose him to free agency.
