If Vancouver does either of those deals after this one

Allvin deserves to be trotted out and laughed at by the entirety of the league because they're bad. Like really bad.

Like wtf Chicago only got their 3rd back bad
horrible trade for vancouver

Expecting too much from a Miller trade, much? I thought Mittlestadt + Drury + picks might be pushing it... Both players are young, signed multiple years beyond this one, and Mitts has 2 previous 60 point seasons, basically

Didn't read all 24 pages but came here to clown on Chicago.

Retained 50% of Rantanen, meaning they were crucial in getting this deal done, and all they got was a third rounder?

If that doesn't explain the Blackhawks management in a nutshell, nothing does.
They saved actual dollars going out, which probably was the key factor

And they gave up Hall too

This trade reminds me a lot of the Tkachuk trade. The amount of people calling it a win for Calgary was hilarious when Huberdeau had his best season ever and never came close to that again.

Necas having his best season ever while Rantanen is on pace for 3rd straight 100 point season. Necas is a good player but he's not close to as good as Rantanen.

I wonder what the chances are the Canes would actually let Mikko get to free agency in the summer. You don’t make this trade without knowing ballpark what Mikko and his agent are wanting.

Is it 100% they are gonna give Rantanen the full boat contact he wants?

I was referencing the bolded.

Why?

Avs knew they were not going to be able to re-sign him so may as well try and get max value for him. They got a solid top 6 player in Necas as well as a respectable 3rd liner for someone they would lose for nothing.

Necas will really fit in really well in Colorado and he is having a career season as well.
With the addition of the picks it's better than it looked when I posted.

I like Necas but feels like Avs bought high, add the picks and it's not bad.

I bet Colorado does trade Mittlestadt after all. Otherwise if they keep him, they're looking very good down the middle.

MacKinnon
Necas
Mittlestadt
Colton

Colorado lost a superstar but they got a bit deeper.
Except Necas never played centre in Carolina not sure he can either

Amazing for a player that has never hit above 71 points in a season. Rantanen is a far superior player. 2 straight 100 point seasons and a 90 point one before that. Give me a call when Necas does half that (he won't).
Ok. We'll see what a full season with MacKinnon is like. I may be calling you at the end of next season already.

I mean the irony is that the actual comp (if you believe there are parallels here) is the opposite of that. Rantanen is the older, bigger name player arguably past his absolutely scoring peak about to get paid as one of the top 5 biggest contracts in the league while Necas is the younger guy putting up a great season that people are doubting. And there are a lot more people screaming here that this is initially a big win for Carolina than for Colorado. So I see the public, popular opinion narrative exactly the opposite of how you framed it.

Pretty good chance this trade doesn’t fit that narrative in any way at the end of the day. But…

Ahh. gotcha. Well, cap-wise it would have to be that. CAR still has lots of assets that VAN could flip or keep (Morrow, F prospects, picks). Could pump and dump Roslovic too, maybe. Sure sounds like CAR is done with VAN now, though

Rantanen is looking for 14 million, Colorado ain’t paying that. Some desperate team like the Flyers/Columbus/Detroit/Islanders might give him his money

14M for a top 5-10 player in the league is appropriate if the expectations of the cap exploding are true. Before the pandemic, Panarin and Tavares both got over 11M under much lower caps. That was sort of the big number for franchise forwards, but then everything took a step back because of how COVID slowed cap growth. Panarin's contract would be about 13M under a 97M cap.

Just like we've seen with goalies, there is going to be an adjustment where it seems higher than it should be at first, but then in 2-3 years if everything happens as expected 14M will be the new number for franchise UFA forwards, or players who everybody thinks aren't really franchise players but get overpaid like them because they are UFAs and a GM went nuts (Tavares).

Why did Colorado do this, instead of just paying Rantanen? How is Makar supposed to take this with being eligible for an extension soon?
