Noticed that he was a healthy scratch last night.

Player is coming off a solid season and just signed a new 4 year contract at $3850 per season.

I understand that he is coming back from injury, but is this a Player that can be had from Dallas? And if so, what is the price?

I think he would be a great add for a Club looking for a gritty 3rd line Center.

As a Stars fan i was very happy Eakin was scratched last night. He's been really bad since he came back from injury and quite frankly he was not good last year either up until the playoffs started . He should be available since he's become kind of redundant on the Stars. Faksa took his role and has been better than Eakin in the shutdown/third center spot .

Eakin IRC allways has mirable possesion stats too .

Who are Dallas' Centers?

Yesterday Seguin , Faksa , Dickinson and Shore played at Center with Spezza occasionally playing there but mostly used at wing.

Theoretically, could Eakin be had for an expiring Cap Dump and a late pick?

Depends on what managment thinks of Eakin. I personally think unless someone pays a decent future piece i'd keep Eakin to expose him in the expansion draft as a 40/70 forward and hopefully lose him there. Don't want to have to expose Roussel .

That probably makes sense, unless you are getting a 40/70 Player in return.

Hell no. The price for Eakin was set this summer at 2 2nds. His numbers are better than Shaw's and Eller's, and his contract is better too, but we'll take the return they got.

As a fan I would think he is definately available le because he seems to have lost the 3C spot to Faksa. That being said I think management really like him so I'm not sure if he would be.

His value I assume would be in the Shaw and Eller ball park because despite his slow start after injury he is still a solid 3C who can PK and play PP.

I'd take a 2nd and a 3rd or a 2nd and a prospect. I'd rather trade Eakin and expose McKenzie who will hopefully have that 40/70 niche. He's at 19 games so far this season. Not hard to see how he'll get in 21 more with 54 games left.

Please someone take him. I promise he'll put up really great numbers (as long as he's 1C between two all-stars)

McKenzie is an RFA so he would first have to be re-signed prior to the expansion to count as 40/70. Not to mention Vegas is not going to ever consider taking him. Eakin on the other hand can easily be polished enough to be the primary expansion draft target from the Stars.

Well he was also good between Garbutt and Roussel 3 years ago . Of course it was all downhill from there for him and Garbutt .

Position wise where other than goal does Dallas have a need?

Nowhere. We have 3 good centers, Eakin, and 2 guys right on the cusp of the NHL in Shore and Dickinson. We'll have Ritchie, Eaves who will never leave, and Nichushkin on the RW next year, with Benn, Janmark and Roussel on the left. And 9 defensemen of NHL quality right now, only one of which is a UFA.

We do not need players nor do we need prospects because we have a glut of 1st and 2nd year NHLers right now. Just picks.

A top 4 LHD would be nice but Eakin is not getting that without major add

I have some interest in Eakin but a contract like Read would have to go back for cap purposes.

What is your expected protection list?

Something like :

Forwards : Benn , Spezza , Faksa and Seguin are lock and Roussel is playing himself into a protection spot as well. Leaves two spots which i would give to Ritchie and Nichuskin imho and leave Eakin and a re-signed Cracknell/Korpikoski/McKenzie exposed as 40/70 guys
Defense : Klingberg , Johns , Lindell
Goalie : Doesn't matter which one of the two.

Had to edit because i forgot Seguin ~~

The question is whether Read is a super duper guy you want value for or if he is a contract that is the right shape. We don't need him and don't want him, but if he is the way to getting 2 2nds, fine.

Seguin Benn Spezza Faksa Ritchie Nichushkin Roussell
Klingberg Johns Lindell

Doesn't matter if Vegas wants to take him. Stars just have to have someone fit that category. I'd still rather expose McKenzie than lose Eakin for nothing. Better to trade him and lose a lesser player than lose the better player for nothing.

1:1 swap for Kunitz?

How about Eakin+Nuke for Kunitz+Archibald (WBS center prospect)?

Why would we want Kunitz ? He does nothing for Dallas and neither does Josh Archibald who looks like a meh AHL player. We have plenty of those ourself with Texas . Eakin is easily tradeable for assets . Hell even exposing Eakin in the expansion draft is better than trading Nukes rights and Eakin for absolutely nothing of value.
