Is it me or does this seem to be happening more often lately? It seemed like we used to go years and years without an incident.
it still happened, but unless it was a serious incident like malarchuk or zednik there was no social media (or not like today's) for it to be shown to the masses

increased speed of the game is no doubt a factor in these incidents

Skate blades got dull fast in old times. So much of the game the blades were dull. Now don’t guys swap out blades so they’re always super sharp?
Blade cuts happened then too, of course, but less teams and less time on ice with sharp blades make for less chances for bad cuts. They did happen though. I remember Salming got a bad one across his face.

I dunno, I feel like I watched hockey pretty nonstop for about 15 years without seeing or hearing of a guy getting kicked in the neck before Zednik, and then several years afterward until the next one happened. It’s not like the internet didn’t exist during that time.

In both recent cases I’m still trying to figure out why a skate is neck high. It’s one thing if you caught a hip check and flipped ass over tea kettle but that’s not this and I’m questioning some instincts of the players. The second you feel your leg go high you bend a knee or twist something to make sure your attached knives don’t hit anything. You don’t just go with the momentum and see what happens. This one definitely seems avoidable? I’m not saying he’s intentionally trying to kick the guy but there was nothing about the body momentum that seems like the full follow through had to happen. Isn’t McCarron really tall? He’s standing straight up. It’s hard work to get keep a foot that high. There was zero effort to avoid this.

Maybe it should be an automatic penalty like high sticking.

I'm glad there's a good camera angle of the incident.

If it were further away and lower resolution we'd have all the internet geniuses certain that Bichsel kicked him on purpose and deserved the death penalty.

To clarify, I definitely recall some instances of skate-to-face contact, usually in the context of someone falling down during a scramble in the dirty areas. Some players ended up with gnarly scars from that sort of thing.

It’s the skate-to-throat incidents that just seem more common lately. Malarchuk and Zednik were fluke, once a generation situations. We’ve now had two serious throat cuts in the past year, this one and Adam Johnson.

I made a thread a few days ago about a jumping incident that didn't result in a bad injury but I think there should be a conversation about skate blade safety. Not really sure how to address it honestly.
