That's great, but let's be realistic here, GMs are often subject to pressure to push forward, not take a step back even if the window is closing. They don't tend to make moves that give up on the Cup now but yield benefits 3+ years down the road, because there's a good chance they won't be the GM by then.

You as a fan ... it's a lot easier to make that call because, well, you ain't going anywhere, right?
whether or not it is easier for e as a fan is irrelevant
my pt is usually as a rule, it is better to go for multiple shots at multiple cups than trying whole hog in a single season or 2
not withstanding there can be exceptions to that rule (a club is so old and has zero-ish total replacement youth that it no longer has that path) my pt is consistent enough to be fact

it is not always "3+ yrs down the road"
esp if this is Standard Operating Procedure
to illustrate that here, let's say they moved Buch when his production was a bit less, but he had more value due to term
or more presently, if they moved Lindgren like 2 years ago when he still could get a late 1st
you have to already be drafting smartly, which is necessary anyway, but that means again, yeah, there is a SMALL negative impact short term but not a big one

bottom line: cannibalizing youth for supposed immediate gains is self defeating
and the proof I am correct is 2-3 yrs of Rangers doing rentals continues to bite them in the ass
and the GMs who did that, did they overcome the results and keep job security with what they did? nope
