What's the story here? I thought they signed him to play C, and didn't care about the contract overpay. Is he not playing to NHL standard? Is he even still a C?

From the sounds of it he's got a bunch of amazing tools but they are just spilled all over the garage and he wouldn't know how to use any of them if he could even find em. They are there somewhere though.

I was excited when the Oilers traded for him years ago and it was only a small sample size but he wasn't very good. Didn't seem to have the IQ to play with the big boys

Nah he knows how to skate.

But everything else? It's like when you buy a fast food combo. AA just eats the burger and throws everything else out.

Sometimes he reaches into the bag and finds a couple fries. He throws those out too.

at that cap hit no one is going to claim him

he may need to agree to a contract termination if he wants to keep playing in the nhl. At the same time i dont think any team is going to give him the 1 year 2.25 million to keep his salary the same.

Question becomes does he play for the money in the minors for a year or take minimum to go elsewhere

Elite tools, no toolbox. The guy's hockey sense makes Kevin Fiala look like Nik Lidstrom. Rooting for him overall, but man, he's made a long career off being a solo merc who can't use his teammates or anticipate a single defensive play.
