Chet Donnelly's Re-Draft GM Game

It's mid-July and you're bored. I can see it on your avatar. Just read this post and sign up for the damn game. I promise you won't be disappointed. Here's the prospectus: All NHL Entry Drafts from 2003 up until 2016 are re-done. Each draft will consist of 30 picks, with each GM owning two picks to start. 30 players in each draft will be picked by our 15 GMs, in a snake draft format. There will be a total of 15 drafts, 14 of which are for players drafted between and including 2003 and 2016. The final draft will be a miscellaneous draft for all other players who were not drafted between and including 2003 and 2016. Players who are eligible for the miscellaneous draft include: Active players drafted to the NHL prior to 2003 (Jaromir Jagr, Henrik Sedin, Duncan Keith, et al.), 2017 draftees (Nolan Patrick, Miro Heiskanen, Elias Pettersson, et al.), 2018-eligible prospects (Rasmus Dahlin, Andrei Svechnikov, et al.), and active players who went undrafted in real life (Mark Giordano, Sergei Bobrovsky, Conor Sheary, et al.).
Rarely is a player drafted to the NHL twice. If a player is drafted in year X and also year X+2, the player would be eligible to be selected in the year X re-draft in this game. An example of this can be found in Frederik Andersen, who was drafted both in 2010 and in 2012. In this case, Andersen would be eligible to be selected in the 2010 re-draft, not 2012.
The draft order for each of the 15 drafts will be randomized. Each of the 15 GMs will get to select first overall in one of the 15 drafts. As mentioned in the opening paragraph, each draft will follow a basic snake draft format. The GM who owns the first pick owns the last pick, the GM who owns the second pick owns the second-to-last pick, and so on. Draft picks can be traded. Three re-draft threads will be posted each day, meaning the draft portion of the game will be conducted for five days. Day one will feature the 2003, 2004, and 2005 re-drafts, respectively. The final day will feature the 2015, 2016, and Miscellaneous re-drafts, respectively. Like in any other game, players must be under contract to an NHL team. Ilya Kovalchuk and Jim Benning are not eligible for the miscellaneous draft, so don't try and get cute. Unsigned prospects, of course, are the exception to this rule.
After this, the game will operate as usual. Teams will have a period to trade amongst each other and decide whether to contend or rebuild. There will NOT be a free agency period. All players not selected in each respective re-draft or miscellaneous draft are removed from the game entirely. After the trade deadline has arrived, we will have a standings vote to determine which teams qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs and which teams qualify for the Rebuilder's Cup Playoffs. The top eight teams will make the SCP, and the bottom seven teams will make the RCP. From there, playoff matchups and voting will be conducted as normal, with the Finals of both sets of playoffs being taken to the Polls board.
There will not be a 2018 NHL Entry Draft in this game. All 2018 draft-eligible prospects are to be selected in the miscellaneous draft, as mentioned above.
There will not be a salary cap in this game. There will, however, be a roster limit of 23 players (13 forwards, 7 defensemen, 3 goaltenders). The minimum roster requirement post-trade deadline is the standard 20 man unit (12 forwards, 6 defensemen, 2 goaltenders). Teams without a backup goaltender at the end of the trade deadline will be disqualified from playoff contention, full stop. Nazem "the dream" Kadri or any other non-goalie is not an acceptable option for backup duty.
