Confirmed Trade: [CGY/PHI] Morgan Frost, Joel Farabee for Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, 2025 2nd, 2028 7th

I wish I could see a bright spot for this for Philly but I don’t. Kuzmenko is slow and isn’t shooting much this year. Pelletier is a heart and soul guy but has stone hands and a muffin shot.

Bennett was ppg in his last 14 games leading up to the trade and rescinded his request after Sutter was hired. It was an idiotic trade as soon as it went through
You do realize that is physically not possible right? He didn't even have 14 points that season for the Flames, how could he possible be a ppg in the prior 14 games? He had 6 points and was playing better sure but that doesn't change the fact that he had only 6 points in the prior 24 games

Canucks missed out with Desharnais Hoglander and a 2nd

Or whatever

Seriously, this is such a wow trade for Calgary. With some injured players due back soon ish Calgary absolutely got deeper and faster and gave up essentially nothing for it.

Kept all their picks, have all that cap space.... damn

The value in the deal for the Flyers is trading 3+ more years of $5M Farabee for expiring $5.5M Kuzmenko. It's to get out of the Farabee contract to have more cap flexibility in the future.

It's a similar trade to Hartnell for Umberger, Voracek for Atkinson, or that convoluted 3 team Cal Petersen deal.

The value is in the contracts, not the players.

Yup, exactly, and as we all remember, those cap flexibility deals were necessary for the Flyers to put the final touches on all their recent contending rosters.

lol, yeah, they've got a cheap roster right now
And now have 8 pending UFAs and 5 RFAs currently on their roster, so they've got a lot wiggle room this summer
Who are the big fish UFAs the Flyers might take runs at July 1?

Conroy moved Pelletier at his highest point - a guy that was previously on waivers - and leveraged that into a high upside deal for them imo. Credit to him he's done really good work.

I guess the + for Philly is that Pelletier could be a long term player for them. Whereas Frost obviously wasnt going to be. And they get a 2nd they could package in other deals. (Highly unlikely Kuz works with Torts imo)

I guess we'll see how Frost does in Calgary. I think Farabee will be a good player for them but I'm less confident in Frost.

If Pelletier & Farabee both work out as good 2nd line/middle 6 players then I guess the deal isn't so bad for the Flyers.
We'll see what happens for sure, but I really like both guys we acquired.... sad Pelts is gone, he was already one of my favorite players, but this trade is all win. I suspect Farabee with slot in Pelletier's spot with Huberdeau and Kadri... while Frost will probably center Sharangovich and Pospisil, with Pos being a guy that can open up some space for Frost.

As a Flames' fan, I like this trade for them. On paper, they win this trade.

However, don't believe the 'Pelletier is a guy that cleared waivers'. Yes, he did at the start of the season, but he just wasn't showing much then, and every team was trying to get to their opening night roster. It was a calculated risk. Put Pelletier on waivers today, and there will be many claims. He has looked much improved, and was looking like he was starting to 'pop' offensively, and is good on the PK. He is also one of those really good 'glue guys' in the room. You guys will like him.

Kuzmenko - this is an interesting one. I can't imagine Torts will like him much. High-end skill, a lethal shot, great interviews... that's about it. He is slow, doesn't play defence well and is not physical. It will be very interesting to see how he gets along with Torts.

2nd and 7th is what it is - a couple more lottery tickets to reverse the 'winners' of the trade. If Frost and Farabee disappoint, and Pelletier continues improving, and Briere drafts a great player with that 2nd, it gets pushed the other way. For now, it certainly seems like a win for the Flames however, but as a Flames' fan, I have seen 'wins' turn into losses pretty quickly too. Cautiously happy about it.

Catering to Torts is not how you win a Cup. This is NBA tanking level bad where you trade all your good players for nothing solely to get worse and get better picks. That's the only thing that makes sense.

I think you are looking at it with far too much hindsight. I do math for a living and I don't think I could count amount of times he would either out dangle himself and turnover the puck, or take some boneheaded offensive zone penalty. He was fantastic in the playoffs but that playoff success was 100% the reason we got the return we did and not something closer to Puljujarvi.
It's not hindsight when tons of people were talking about how he was being misused as a bottom 6 winger. He's a center who should have been playing with other skilled players.

That trade was a disaster the moment it was made. The fact that you're trying to defend it is laughable, and only highlights how poor your understanding of Bennett's game is.

Can't fully judge this until we see what they do with the cap space they created going forward by moving on from Farabee.

I think Philly knows they need a 1C now it's just a matter of who.

Then trade one of them away for a centre, Rantanen is better than all of them. Or you could slide tippet and Konecny to the LW and have you top 6 be

Konecny-Cates-Rantanen
Tippett-Couterier-Michkov

If you can add a 1C or a 2C to that group thats an elite top 6.
"Just a 100 point winger and a 1C away from an elite top 6" is not really saying much.

Are there teams in the league that wouldn't have elite top 6s after adding Mikko Rantanen and a 1C?

All I want to know is what in the f***ing world possible dialogue could’ve been said from either party to explain why there’s a 7th round draft pick FOUR drafts from now included in the trade.
"We're almost there but I feel like I need to get a bit more value Craig"
"How about I throw in a $100 Subway gift card?"
"That's not allowed under the CBA, got something of similar value?"

Kuzmenko and Torts reminds me of when we had Ales Kotalik in New York under Torts. He couldn't get rid of him fast enough. Somehow got the Flames to take him and his contract in the Jokinen deal.

Kuzmenko probably gets flipped again at the deadline for a pick

I hope there was a bunch of back and forth on that pick in particular.

But honestly how much do NHL teams even know about a draft 4 years from now?

Frost has been on the trade block since the season started, so not shocking to see him there. And Farabee has been underperforming this year but still could be useful. All four players seem like they are slightly interchangeable, skill-wise. But not overly skewed one way or the other, despite Calgary giving up a 2nd. I'll laugh if that 7th rounder becomes the best player in this trade.
