adding Rantanen would be huge for the flyers they could trade on of their picks and extra wingers for a centre.

Problem is they just gave two of those RWs (Tippett and Konecny) 8-year contracts and they also have, uh, Michkov. I love Rantanen but if the plan is to take a run there they should have been trading RWs, not committing like $25m worth of cap into them beforehand.

Kuzmenko has skill, but there's one play I remember him from. He had the puck skating at the offensive blue line and Flames were going for a line change. Easy play, just dump the puck. But instead he tried to dangle through 2 or 3 guys, lost the puck and the other team got a 3-on-1, cant remember if they scored. Torts is gonna love him.

The value in the deal for the Flyers is trading 3+ more years of $5M Farabee for expiring $5.5M Kuzmenko. It's to get out of the Farabee contract to have more cap flexibility in the future.

It's a similar trade to Hartnell for Umberger, Voracek for Atkinson, or that convoluted 3 team Cal Petersen deal.

The value is in the contracts, not the players.

The dumb thing was using him as a bottom 6 winger for the duration of his career in Calgary and then moving him for a ‘whatever’ return. Promptly goes to top 6 center on a cup winning team is very Flames-ee
I think you are looking at it with far too much hindsight. I do math for a living and I don't think I could count amount of times he would either out dangle himself and turnover the puck, or take some boneheaded offensive zone penalty. He was fantastic in the playoffs but that playoff success was 100% the reason we got the return we did and not something closer to Puljujarvi.

Conroy moved Pelletier at his highest point - a guy that was previously on waivers - and leveraged that into a high upside deal for them imo. Credit to him he's done really good work.

I guess the + for Philly is that Pelletier could be a long term player for them. Whereas Frost obviously wasnt going to be. And they get a 2nd they could package in other deals. (Highly unlikely Kuz works with Torts imo)

I guess we'll see how Frost does in Calgary. I think Farabee will be a good player for them but I'm less confident in Frost.

If Pelletier & Farabee both work out as good 2nd line/middle 6 players then I guess the deal isn't so bad for the Flyers.

Farabee 100% is going to replace Pospisil in our lineup, the winger for Huberdeau and Kadri our ‘first line’. (I use this term very loosely).
Pelletier already replaced Pospisil there. Farabee will replace Pelts on the top line and Frost will center Rango and Pospisil.

Then trade one of them away for a centre, Rantanen is better than all of them. Or you could slide tippet and Konecny to the LW and have you top 6 be

Konecny-Cates-Rantanen
Tippett-Couterier-Michkov

If you can add a 1C or a 2C to that group thats an elite top 6.

I think this deal would have been fine if it was just that, though. Kuzmenko and a 2nd for Farabee at least makes a bit of sense. I still think it’s not great for Philly but I can squint and see how it makes sense if they’ve soured on Farabee.

Downgrading from Frost to Pelletier in addition, though? Pelletier was waived earlier this year. Just a bizarre decision to do all of that.

Hasn't Frost been in and out of Torts' dog house too the last couple of years?

He's an RFA coming off a bridge deal, what does his next contract look like? Multi year deal in the $3.5-4M+ range? Flyers probably made up their mind they weren't going to extend him. Similar in a way to the Rangers with Kakko.

Pelletier is 2 years younger and an RFA with an $840k qualifying offer. If he impresses Philly, he likely gets a 2 year bridge deal in the $1.5-$2M per range. Basically resetting the clock 2 years on their current salary commitment to Frost. Danny Briere was once waived himself by Phoenix and passed over by every team, so maybe he sees some of himself in Pelletier.
