The 26-year-old goaltender attended L.A. Kings camp on a professional tryout last month.

The Calgary Flames added depth to their goaltending position inking former Red Wings prospect Tom McCollum to a two-year, two-way contract, THN has learned.
The deal pays McCollum $575,000 at the NHL level and $175,000 in the AHL in Year 1, and $650,000 in the NHL and $200,000 in the AHL in Year 2. The contract includes $250,000 of guaranteed money.

Apparently, 5 goalies under contract was not enough for the Flames!

It's kind of bizarre, really. Calgary has Brian Elliott and Chad Johnson at the NHL level. Jon Gillies, Mason McDonald and David Rittich in the minors (Along with Nick Schneider in the WHL). Unless Rittich is wanting to return to the Czech Republic, this is weird, to me.

Flames had nobody that could be exposed for the expansion draft. Everyone was either exempt or without a contract.

Every team needs to make a goalie available in the expansion draft.

The Flames had no eligible goalies - until now.

I think McDonald may be going back to the Q, or Rittich back to Europe. But McCollum was needed to met expansion requirements as we had no goalies to expose.

Sometimes I feel bad when players don't make the NHL and only ever reach the AHL. Then I remember they're still making $200,000+ a year playing minor professional hockey. Then I don't feel so bad anymore.

Still don't fully understand why Detroit let him go...

Anyone fill me in?

He's just not a good goalie at the NHL level. Mrazek and Coreau are better long-term options. Detroit also has Joren Van Pottelberghe, Chase Perry, and Jake Paterson in the system still.

It probably means that Calgary doesn't intend to extend Elliot and/or Johnson, at least not for now.

Good for McCollum to at least get a contract! He's better than a lot of goaltenders who are currently playing in the AHL.

I think Elliott will get extended sometime in the next few months. If Johnson is back he will get signed after the expansion draft. But I think the Flames are hoping Gillies can step into the backup role next season as they potentially have 2 more goalies going pro next year in Schneider and Parsons.
