Wow. This new advertising is horrendous. It really makes following the play that much harder when so much is moving all over the place. I think it would be different if it wasn't actually moving. But with it moving and the players moving and the puck moving its almost sickening.

Does anyone know if this is just an ESPN thing or if this is new for this season?

It's on Cbc feed too I haven't really noticed things moving and ahaking too much with it but it's a bit annoying that it is all the same ad. I haven't really paid much attention to it after the initial "wow, that's really cool" phase

One wierd thing that was happening was something glowing/flashing on players' shoulders during a stoppage in play. I really don't know what that was all about.

Doesn't make following the play difficult at all and for the most part not distracting, and also, there was very little movement with the ads. So overall I don't understand your feelings on this.

The only issue I had with the ads were some of them the colors seemed too unnatural. There was a Pizza one and a Tim Horton one were it appeared as bright reds and oranges against bright white boards. That stood out and I disliked that quite a bit. Most of them used cooler colors on gray or off white boards, those were basically unnoticeable and totally fine.

I don't have a problem with it. It's kinda cool and for the most part i barely notice it.

One thing I would suggest as an improvement is for them to desaturate the colours. Real ads on the boards don't come across as clear and bright in colour (maybe something to do with perspective?)

I kind of liked it, But I would love it if they kept the all the boards completely white while play was going on then during the breaks and whistles you could put what ever you want on them. I would guess most people are like myself in that I never notice the ads on the boards because you see them all the time. But it they are moving and flashy they would catch my eye right before a faceoff and such.

I absolutely hate it. I'm fine with the normal ads on the boards, to me it adds to the charm even though they are still adverts. This cgi stuff is so annoying and imo it really takes away from the game. It's embarrassing this is what is becoming of our society.

I really like it, gives opportunity to make more money on ads, flexibility and can be used for effects.

Thumbs up from me and Don.

I am surprised by the overall *positive* reaction to this. Maybe it is because I am older than most here, but I was actually getting slightly sick from all the movement. But I would say I am in the very small minority on this one.

There should absolutely NOT be animation on the ads during play. That's ridiculous.

I don't mind it for the most part. It is only distracting for me when the play is at the boards. When players stop hard and snow shoots up high, it really screws with the CGI giving a distracting effect to the boards. It isn't too bad though, I bet with some more work on the technology, that could be fixed easily enough.

I also noticed when the puck is flipped up high, and it crosses the foreground of the CGI boards, the puck disappears, which is kind of annoying.

But again, these are just little annoyances. If they perfect this, and this is the alternative to jersey ads, I take this 10 out of 10 times. But who am I kidding? 5 years down there road, they will be looking for more ways to make money and jersey ads will come up yet again.

I don't think there is?

It may have been right after a faceoff or something, but I'm 99% sure there was animation during play - since we were commenting it at the time. I'll have to pay closer attention to it today (I realize that's counter-intuitive). :)

Not going to see it in all NHL games because it is too costly. From the Globe & Mail:

"..the technology is too cumbersome to allow for that. Supponor’s system required the NHL to attach hardware to the TV cameras that would pick up an infrared signal from an invisible film placed over the boards. The film had to be tested to ensure it could withstand checks, and that the ad images were clean and sharp and didn’t blend with the image of the game play. To install the hardware in 31 NHL arenas would be cost prohibitive. However, the NHL is hoping a software solution may soon be developed to allow ad insertions to be done by a central team."

I think it's pretty cool, and not too much of a distraction. However there was a sequence where Polak went to play the puck in the corner, popped up, and disappeared completely because it went 'behind' the advertisements. Confused the hell out of me until I realized there were virtual ads.

No movement during play and I have no issue. Movement during play and it's a ****ing disgrace.

A couple execution issues need to be ironed out, but i do like this direction for ads. A cleaner look, and when a team wins their team name and logo flash around the building! They should do that for goals as well!

The animations do not seem to play during play and they look the same as the old boards, so I think they are fine. And if it keeps them from putting them on the ice or on the uniforms, then great! also referee helmet cams should stick around too.
