Not surprising. Was just discussing this inevitability with my FIL over the holidays. Neither of us expected him to be claimed, but then I woke up today to see my Sens are carrying Merilainen and Sogaard on our road trip.

Now I'm thinking maybe he will get claimed, if only to be waived again very soon after, reclaimed and sent to Laval (which is likely what MTL wants)

a bit surprising even though he's been bad this year. Hughes held onto him last year until they dealt Allen, but it hasn't worked out - and now he's been surpassed by Dobes with Fowler waiting in the wings.
I assume they tried to trade him with no takers. He's making 900k and is an RFA next year. He's only 25 and has that family pedigree.
I think the gets claimed

He won’t be claimed.. not a NHL calibre goalie.

Well actually I guess only way he gets claimed is so a team can waive him again to attempt to get him on their minor team.

Sens are better off to stick with Merilainen

I don't see him as an upgrade for any team. His confidence gets shot by nearly every possible situation. Has to battle for a spot? No confidence. Has spot handed to him? No confidence. Plays well in AHL, gets called up, soon loses confidence.

He needs a sports psychologist and the best defensive team in the league to build him to his potential. I don't think he couldn't be a starter but it's a long road like it was with Lindgren.

Agreed, but I am not so sure about Sogaard. He clearly wasnt NHL caliber in his game this year (or last year), then proceeded to get injured, return to the AHL a week or so ago, and put up some very mediocre performances. The bar is about as low as it can get, and even still I have strong doubts about whether Primeau can reach it.

Ottawa has played better this year, but I still don't like their defensive game, so your doubt is very well founded as Primeau likely needs the AHL to play better, get some confidence and work his way back.

If he clears and goes to Laval it could be a good place for him to play, get some confidence and go to his next team ready to prove he's an NHL goaltender.
