We don't really know anything if we are just going based off of what Dubas said. At the Heritage Classic, he said he was good with his goaltending. Then he waived Mrazek and took a chance on Sateri, which suggests otherwise.
Dubas said he was sticking to his plan and not to overreact to what other teams were doing. He has also said he will not trade top prospects and picks in deals which did not make sense for this team (and especially not for rentals).
Finally, Dubas said he would focus more on defense than anything at the TDL and that he had a lot of faith in Campbell/Mrazek to turn it around. Campbell/Mrazek are still our tandem, and he added Giordano.
Based on what has happened, it sound to me like those words matched his actions. Friedman and the other insiders were not in the room and do not know how those conversations arose. It is well known that Dubas likes to explore every option and do his due-diligence. He said so himself, and other GMs say they do the same thing themselves. He is going to ask for the prices on certain guys and certain packages. That is about where the facts end.
But to comment on some other things... Friedman gets his bread buttered everywhere, and it was Dreger who reported it anyways. Dreger has been completely out of the loop in regards to the Leafs since Dubas has taken over. These guys get their hits from whomever gives it to them, and that will certainly include Chicago. You want to put the chances that this was the time that Dubas finally decided to leak something to Dreger, and then subsequently got pissed at Davidson in public for doing something that he himself did?
Finally, as to what Chicago has to lose and the need for damage control? How about a completely unproven and rookie GM making a major mistake in less than a month before he was officially named a GM in the league. One that makes you look like a complete amateur to the rest of the league. Seems like a major incentive to me. Whereas what damage control does Dubas need to worry about, especially with Knies? If anything he would need to do damage control with his goalies, but even then he has already made his position perfectly clear in that regard too. He is not the one who messed up; why should he be the one who has to do damage control and clean it up?
