Another thought: a year ago, this would have been considered a fleecing by BUF because Casey still hadn't really become what he is today, and expectations were still higher for Byram. Byram is only 22. This could still turn out well. And you have to factor the contract situation into it.
It is more of why now? Byram needs the same type of support player to cover his defensive gaffes as power. Now you have two of them. You got younger when experience was needed. You were thin at Center considering Mitts was really the only true center with hope that Cozens or Krebs will make it. If any other professional hockey person looked at this offer the only conclusion they could come to is KA didn’t want to pay Mitts. But the trade doesn’t make the team better today. Or tomorrow. Maybe in a dew years if Ohstlund pans out. 🤦‍♂️

No matter how you slice it, especially with Kevyn's over-confidence in getting a deal done based on his own words, it's a mark against Adams. He still had a full year before he needed to sign a new contract.

Now Adams has a defenseman that he essentially has to do the same thing with in regards to signing another contract, but this player not having any loyalty to the organization that would be important for a franchise that has trouble trading for players with any sort of clauses in their contracts.
Well, under contract for another year, but I didn't notice Mittelstadt is still an RFA at the end of the year too. So maybe a little less sense there.

tin foil hat: terry has told kevin they arent buying out skinner and they arent paying donny not to coach, so kevin's internal time frame is for when the skinner contract expires so he can replace don and free up skinner's cap to trade from a position of strength

You know, your team can always make more trades in the offseason to solve these issues. Guys like Byram don't become available too often. I understand why your GM jumped on the opportunity to deal from a position of strength

I know it was mentioned, but LH PMD is already a position the team is awash in. What they needed was not what they dealt for - the opposite of it in fact - and it opens up a hole at a key position.

The fans in Buffalo know you can always make more trades in the offseason to solve issues. Our GM, who decided it was best for the organization to run back pretty much the same roster from a non-playoff team the season prior, may not get that memo. If you can, please send it to him.

You don't have a position of strength when you trade your best player of said strength on the team, only to see it significantly decreases the strength of said position, especially when you are acquiring a player that doesn't shore up what your team needs. Thompson isn't the center that will be able to handle the matchups that Granato used Casey for. Cozens is quite a bit of ways away from taking those duties. Krebs isn't close to be capable of being used in said roles that Thompson or Cozens, in order for them to take the roles Casey left behind.

At some point they had to flip a forward for a D and he is the one who was next in need of getting paid. I just expected it to be a more veteran D. Did not expect to get younger.

Byram hasn't had a good year at all. But if they liked the player at least they did something. This is good news for Krebs and maybe for going back to an all D jump into the play all the time style that was, at least, fun.
Say what? He literally jumped immediately into the NHL and hasn't produced a negative +/- season. He's been really good considering his age.

This trade doesn't make sense to our current state of the franchise but we got value coming back.

Literally every team in the NHL will want a Bowen Byram with the control he still has. Mitts market is limited. This was a decent "business" move for the team. We extracted maximum value

That's the issue I have. Mitts is their best true center in terms of playstyle and ability to make linemates better. Tage and Cozens is the worst 1-2 punch in the league in that regard. Two bozos skating around relying on their linemates for their brains and skill. Add Krebs into the mix and it's certainly a bottom-tier 1-2-3 spine in the league.

We're going to be one of the worst teams in the league for the foreseeable future with a move like this. Ostlund is maybe the only true center prospect in their pipeline, and he's at least 3 years aways from producing. Mitts should have been id'd as a core player and one of the braindead loser types traded out of here for help elsewhere. It's no secret that Mitts was coming up clutch down the stretch while Tage and Cozens had diarrhea running down their legs. Can you imagine these two shitheads in the post season? Not that we'll ever make it with them getting the key minutes. This team is completely and utterly screwed.

What in the serious cluelessness are you talking about? Another LHD effects Joki how?
with dahlin power johnson and now byram with joker on an expiring contract, odds just went he doesnt get resigned and maybe even gets traded before the deadline

At some point we had to trade forwards for defense. Imagine being upset about acquiring a 22 yr old former top 5 pick for a player who would not fit into out long term plans as a 3C.

I am curious but why does Mittelstadt not fit as a long term center on this team?

I'm not positive, but it kinda feels like a big portion of your existence has evolved into mocking Kevyn Adams over the past couple of years. Once he is fired, I am afraid you are going to be left with a large hole in your life ;)

Eh, I'd much rather be talking about our potential playoff opponents than making fun of a guy who should have never been hired in the 1st place.
