This feels like something that probably started cooking last offseason before they signed Clifton and Johnson. Mittelstadt was the one forward still due a payday, and everyone knows they can afford to ship out some youth at forward. I don't hate moving him for a defenseman, although Byram's injury history is definitely a concern.

Obviously others will say they should have kept Mittelstadt and shipped out [prospect of your choosing] for [magic obvious armchair GM move], but I think they'd rather have Kulich etc on an ELC plus Byram on D than Mittelstadt at $7M plus whatever awful UFA D would want to come here.

Pretty sure that next season they already have the most expensive D in the league.
Well thankfully, our GM hasn't shown a history of looking at potential and making long term financial decisions. Can't get any worse.:sarcasm:

And this speaks about the quality of leadership of the coaching staff, and the veteran leadership and player types that the GM brings in, and paints a picture of what could be wrong with the room and the players on the roster. The coach sets the standards of the room. The actions of the players and if they are performing terrible habits, NEED and SHOULD be checked at the door.

But if management is trying to send a message sending Casey away, when he's been a picture of everything they would EXPECT to see from their player, it shows that maybe Adams and the coaching staff don't have a grasp on knowing what they want to do. Instead of pointing at Casey and saying "look what Casey did, we expect each and everyone of you to follow suit". It would be a lot easier to sell to the players than "hey look at how much Casey improved by doing what we wanted, and because he's close to you guys, we are getting rid of him". Just a reminder, he was the one at his college during the all-star week, getting some skating in. It don't make sense.

Now the most likely reason why Casey was traded, was rooted in his contract situation, which is completely fair, but there's a ton of backlash from fans, from different ends of the spectrum, that may look at previous comments and actions from management and coaches of saying one thing, looking at Casey checking off a lot of the things they "value" and are reacting accordingly.

EDIT: @SwordStanley10 Care to point out where the toxicity was in my post (since you pointed to me specifically). I was just responding to some of the things you said, as I clearly disagreed with the post.
Your original post speaks for itself. This just adds further flavour. Maybe youre right, or maybe they saw a need and the only asset they could use to fix it. Agree to disagree, I don't care enough to get into this

Yeah, a couple of years ago. Same thing with the entire NHL who thought Byram's career was done...a couple of years ago.

If you wait 2-3 years to dunk on someone, it's not the dunk you think it is.

Certainly wouldn't mind taking Samuelsson and one of the shiny prospects to get a top 6 guy with bite.

You know what amazes me, is the reaction from the Avs fans. They really think they are getting their "2C". I really hope Middlestadt finds success and lives up to that, but I don't really see him being a 2C on a good team.

Reading through the Avs reactions and listening to the instant reaction podcasts, I think they may have been in such despair due to their center depth, this may be more about relief in getting that addressed and I am not sure they really understand the player they are getting.

Pressure is on Casey.

Meh I think he'll be pretty f***ing good on Colorado. Maybe not a game breaker but will be impressive.

Well Tage and Cozens still exist unless we've already given up on them. I'm also a big believer in Krebs. I just don't think paying Mitts 7+ million was ever in the cards. Idk even if we don't like the return I just never figured Mitts into our long term future.
Why would you think I’m bashing Tage/Cozens?

I’m talking about needing a strong center spine. Like the co-captains era with Roy/Goose behind them. We took a big step back from that with this trade. Krebs is nowhere near the level Mitts is. I dont see him being there next season and it wouldn’t be fair to him to expect it.

That may be true about Mitts at 7mil. But that’s a shame, because three top 6 centers at a total of 21 million is good value. All 3 of them would be outside the top 60 forward cap hits.

Instead we may end up with 3 dmen at 8+mil. Thats not great value and certainly doesn’t free up money to keep/sign other players as some are arguing.

I have to think that’s what’s coming up. But it might not be until the summer. I’ll reserve judgment on what their “plan” is until I see it play out through the off-season.

This reminds of when GMJB loaded up on RHD so he could move Risto and then he couldn't move Risto so we just had like 5 RHD all season.

A move that requires a follow up move to make any logical sense isn't a good move unless the follow up move is almost immediate or the return is so immense you have to take it.

Adams is now tasked with turning defensive depth into a legit top 6F in a summer where the UFA class for bottom 4 d-men is deep and the cap is finally rising. 20+ UFA d-men averaged over 17 Minutes TOI a night. Doesn't mean they are all good, but I have to imagine the trade market on D isn't going to be that robust when they can just sign someone.

You're right about the desperation, but the Avs don't need Casey to be a high-end 2C. We have some of the best wingers in the game and he'll be flanked by guys like Rantanen/Nichuskin/Lehkonen (maybe Landeskog)

He's a huge upgrade on Johansen and allows Colton to slot in at 3C. The Hawks proved you don't need a high-end 2C if you have the other pieces in place, and Vegas just did it again with Chandler Stephenson.

This is a win for Colorado if it leads to a Cup or 2 during his tenure here, but in the end I definitely believe you got the player with higher potential/more valuable asset. But it's just something the Avs had to address, and Mitts has been the best option for a while.

More than anything, I'm pleasantly surprised about what people had to say about his character and defensive responsibility etc. I think he will fit in nicely in the system and most new Avs players see a bump in production

Running with three less proven centers than Mittelstadt doesn't sound like a long-term future that should be in the cards either. Not to mention there isn't a 4th.

Package up Sammy and one of the prospects for a good good top 6 two way player with bite. Sign a RD in free agency. Shore up the 4th line.

The one good thing that comes out of this trade is that this locker room might wake the f up seeing one of their best buddies get traded, it's not gonna be kumbaya around the fireplace forever.
Yeah the silver lining to this is pissing Dahlin off by trading one of his close friends

Mittelstadt is going to be P/GP with the Avs. I am highly confident of that. Byram better be good.

Maybe show them if they play well enough, the Sabres might move them to a contender... :sarcasm:

I keep reading this too. Like “Mitts is close to guys underperforming or who came in out of shape to start the year. This is to show that nobody is safe”.

I don’t know. If guys come in slow or fat. Or they stop trying, did anybody in the org think about swiftly moving on from those guys instead?

Like imagine coming into a role job fresh out of grad school, you stumble a bit to start but eventually you are the best territory rep in the whole company, but a bunch of the guys your boss favors are stumbling. So your boss sends you packing to prove a point....to everybody else who is underperforming?

But instead of working in that cubical for that local mom and pop, you end up with a promotion at Google where you get unlimited PTO, you bring your dog to work everyday, and plus free lunch, yoga on wednesdays, and a beer cart on Fridays.

That'll teach those assholes at the old place to shape up!
