This is probably the year to do it. There’s not really a clear best team in the east. It can certainly be them. They’re good offensively, defensively and analytics. They’ve been pretty patient up until now. The prospect pool is still pretty good to use as potential trade bait. I think the time is ripe.

To put into perspective the offensive boost that Miller offers, this is the first season in five years where any Carolina Hurricane player is on pace to outscore JT Miller in a season.

They did it last year too with Guentzel, they probably had to realize they got Igor'd last year or they probably win the East last year or have a very good series with Florida at the least in the ECF. Maybe Dundon's thinking has changed with high cost rentals

I think he didn't want to pay that price for a winger but for a centre while most likely getting rid of Jesperi contract will incentivize them to take a risk regardless of risk especially considering the canes probably want to push for a cup this season.

They grabbed Guentzel last year, but didn’t do what they needed to keep him. Obviously.

Still don’t understand why the Pens traded him.

They weren’t winning the East last year.

Because this year was supposed to be a "down year". They lost two of their top 4 defensemen from last year, two of their top 6 forwards from last year, and did nothing to address their goaltending.

They've managed to somehow replicate their success this year, mostly due to a very hot start from Necas and a very weak Eastern Conference.
